When I was that age, people thought it was cool to be "gangsta". Listening to rap, wearing ridiculous clothes, acting tough, pretending to have gang connections, etc. Most people weren't fooled, but that didn't stop them.

Now it's cool to be "smart". To some this means "understanding" topical subjects, like politics, shouting meaningless slogans, arguing talking points that they don't fully understand, affiliation with political parties, etc.

It's the same thing, just repackaged. 10 years from now, it will be a memory, and no one will admit to being part of the fad.
