pretty big fan of virtual novels...played through all of Danganronpa and Phoenix Wright. always hear about how good 999 is but I've tried to play it twice and it never hooked me (admittedly I didn't play it much longer than an hour at most).

worth another try? and this is part of the Zero Escape games right? are they as mind fucking as say, danganronpa is? they're more puzzle based rather than like, investigations and trials, right?

Well, there is a port of 999 for iOS that removes all of the puzzle sections. It might make it a bit easier to get into the series.

The puzzle rooms are definitely a huge part of the series though. So even if you take that route you'll still have to deal with them in the other two games. You could opt to just follow a (non-spoiler) puzzle walkthrough to skip through the tricky ones I suppose.

999 is excellent, and Zero Escape as a whole is great. I actually don't hate Zero Time Dilemma as much as most of the fanbase, but I completely understand where they're coming from.

I'll suck it up for the puzzles. I don't wanna skip main elements of the gameplay. I'm a sucker for a good mindfuck story and good characters, so if I can just get to a point where it hooks me I'll be all set.

Hmm is it just the ending that pisses people off like Danganronpa v3? Or the whole thing? I can usually forgive an ending if everything leading up to it is great.

Regarding ZTD: A little bit of both. The ending IS dumb, but there are some things scattered throughout that made people angry

And if you're looking for good mindfuck story and good characters, the last thing in that pic I posted, Umineko, is absolutely what you want. It's pure story, no "gameplay" puzzles. Like, the puzzles are just you thinking about the mysteries.

999 is an awesome game. If you don't like puzzles perhaps look for a spolier free walkthrough.

And skipping them means skipping several funny dialogues
