All you'll do is tell people to turn off their computer and then turn it back on. Get paid 10-15 dollars doing it and then move on to whatever other IT positions after that.

Agreed, and that's where I started in the IT industry as well. I'm just saying I never want to go back to that. After about a couple years of doing ISP tech support, I was desperately wanting to move up to the next thing. It was a great starting point for me, but my skill set slightly outgrew the job after a while, but not enough to slam dunk an interview for an actual networking position.

I was pretty immature back then and expected my job to teach me what I needed to know to move up to that desired networking position. When I interviewed for an actual networking job with another company, I bombed the interview so hard. I realized I had been wasting my life away by staying in that job way too long and didn't have any idea of how to get the knowledge to move up. A friend showed me the CBT Nuggets series for the Cisco certifications and sent me the videos.

Even after that, I didn't take studying too seriously. I eventually moved up to a desktop support position, which was better and had a much wider "scope of support." It allowed me to fix way more problems for people than I ever could as an ISP support tech. Still every now and then I'd be doing things that were really advanced for the position and once prompted a co-worker to ask, "Dude... Why do you work here?"

After a while, I finally landed a position as an entry level NOC tech. This was the *perfect* job move for me. They were planning on teaching me networking from the ground up. I started out doing graveyard shifts there 4 days per week. Since it was so slow, I was spending most of the night on Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, or other video streaming sites. About 6 months into that, I noticed I wasn't progressing as fast as I thought I would. So, I finally bought a Cisco Press certification guide for the CCENT exam and got serious about studying.

I was working about 55 - 60 hours per week just because they let me work however much overtime I wanted. I decided to cut myself back to 45 hours per week max and use the extra 15 - 20 hours per week to study as well as study during the down time at work. 3 months later I had my 1st Cisco certification, and it has been all uphill since.

Its pretty rare I can't figure it out unless its:

-Not a software problem, but a management problem. (Accounts not built properly)
-Software I haven't heard of or don't support
-A hardware problem that can't be fixed over the phone
-Something so convoluted that I shouldn't be spending an hour on the phone with a single customer.

Most of the tickets we got were because our help desk didn't have the rights to fix the problem or they weren't familiar with the systems.

None. All you need to get into a Help Desk is some technical experience such as tech support from a call center or the technology department from Target.

The only thing I needed for my ISP support technician was a basic familiarity with Windows and some basic tech knowledge. My phone interview was literally them asking me what a modem was, giving directions from where I was to where I lived, and some basic Windows stuff like getting to the command prompt and doing ipconfig, ping, and traceroute commands.

Admittedly, I've been lazy AF in that regard since I got this job as a sole network engineer for a company. I've got to renew my CCNP cert by April of 2019, so I'm gonna aim to get back on the ball early next year. I spent about 4.5 years reading through certification guides and studying and taking exams, so I figure it wouldn't hurt to take some time off from doing that.

Gotta get back to it soon, though.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone wanted to take a pay cut to go from software dev to help desk tbh. Programming is icky.

But the money is better and programming is a specialized skill.

It's good to take a break from it. Can't study all the time. I've been lazy myself and studying on and off for the last year to get my vSphere 6 pro cert. I'll take it eventually....lol

Unless your job requires you to renew it, then don't worry about it. All of my certs have expired already. You're just using the cert to get to the next level in your career. Keep focusing on future certs....which of course they renew your old certs but still. Point is, unless you've let it expire 10 years ago then don't worry.

Godnorgosh posted...
It's kinda rough that there's never a point where you can be like, okay, I've learned everything I need to learn, now I can just grind and go home and relax. But I guess a lot of careers are going in that direction. Continuing education is a growing trend.

Well it depends. If you are happy at your one job and want to keep it until retirement then you'll probably never have to study for another cert ever again. On the flip side, the more motivation you have to study in your off time, the more opportunities open up for you. The main reason I got my current job was because my boss was impressed with my study habits. It showed him that I was hungry and wanted a challenge. Didn't have anything to do with my certs.

The main thing stopping me from getting better certs (I'm still coasting on an A+) I got back in 2009, is that my study habits are very bad, and I'm easily distracted by stuff.
