80/80

Anyways, my wife and I have had a really shitty last 6 weeks. First was my motorcycle accident caused by a drunk with no insurance who refuses to pay.

Then I've been having problems at work due to an over involved mother that the school basically made my boss. Essentially doubled my work load and all those extra hours are spent doing useless tasks.

Then last Friday I was in another accident. Dark s-turn, someone thought it was a good idea to pour gravel all over the road midway into the turn. Was barely doing 30kmh, bike just went out from under us. I got a groin pull, some road rash and destroyed my GS7 Edge. My wife got lucky with only a few scratches.

In 2 weeks I go to Malaysia to renew my 1year visa. Due to an American pedophile being caught in Samui hiding out as a teacher they've made it that all people applying for teaching work visas needs to supply a police report. Said report needs to be done in Bangkok and takes 6 weeks.

We are going to try without it. One agent says he can get it (they are a bit shadier to say the least but I have a friend who used them multiple. However, if I don't get it we've decided we are moving to Canada in May. Just too many shitty things happening in a row (the whole year has been like that it seems). Feel like it'll be a sign saying get the fuck outta here while you can.

Wife and I discussed it a lot this evening and she is leaning towards wanting to go more so than stay. Realise that it's likely better for our daughter in the long run and it provides us with more over all stability.

I much prefer the weather here. Island paradises are 2 hours from me. And it's never cold. Plus the quality of life you can have is really good for the cost (can have a nice condo, motorcycle, and party/eat out all the time on under $2000/month).

The downside is the education isn't as good and the roads are dangerous as fuck.

Teachers in Bangkok (foreigners) make around $1600/month. Else where is less. You can still live a really good life here on $1200/month and know many that do and that includes saving some cash. Food is less than $2 per meal if you like Thai food.

I fucking hated Thailand and the people I met there. It's one giant literal dump where white trash go to party, and the locals turn everything remotely worth looking at into a tourist trap

On $2000 I'm talking about living in a higher end condo in Bangkok, eating out every every meal, partying whenever you want, going on day trips and shit, etc.

On $2000 in pretty much any bit of Thailand is the equivalent of living on 2-3x more than that virtually anywhere on North America. A condo that would cost $1,000,000 in Toronto would be $200,000 in Bangkok.

I was in Vietnam last month.

If Thailand is at all similar, yes, come back to Canada. Where you can flush the toilet paper and not risk getting run over by a moped on the sidewalk.

No me of its true. I went to Thailand/Cambodia backpacking for 2 months. Loved it, later that year I went back for 8 months to train and fight in Muay Thai. Met my wife while there. On another trip a few months later she got pregnant and I decided to move here.

It's quite the opposite tbh. If they are 40+ year old single men and only going to Bangkok/Phuket/Pattaya then they are definitely sex tourists. The majority however are gap year kids or 20 something year olds coming to party.

Yea. They are some serious discussion about legalising marijuana but right now you could go to jail for a year for one joint. However, nearly every cop in the country is corrupt as fuck and you can likely bribe your way out for $500-$1000.

Are they any other downsides other than unsafe traveling conditions? Perhaps try to use a vehicle instead of a bike for safety?

Can you make considerably more money in Canada than in Thailand? Maybe it's time to call the living abroad "vacation" or "lifestyle" over with for awhile, move back to where things may seem more stable and safe, better education for your child, etc. Try to save up money and considering it's cheap there, maybe retire earlier than most and go back there?

Outweigh the pros and cons of each situation. I personally value education. I want my child to be able to do well and have the opportunity. I'm not sure how the next generation of kids will fair in Thailand.

You might be able to meet in the middle and move to Alberta or something. Yeah, it's cold but you can't have it all.

She doesn't want to move back. She makes more money here than she would in Canada. She's just coming to realise how much better Canada will be for our child. Don't have to worry about us dying every time we go out on the road. People who have never been here will never get just how dangerous it is driving.

It's really not any safer in a car and if some dumbass on a scooter hits my car and dies I'll be sent to jail because I'm a foreigner and will almost always be at fault for everything.

Other than road safety it's a safe place as long as you stay out of the southern 3 provinces which have almost daily terrorist attacks.

Yea the plan is Edmonton. We can stay with my parents for a few months until we are both working and get our on place.

We did the pros/cons thing last night. Canada of course had far more pros. I just hate the weather there and have grown really attached to Thailand over the past few years. But th government here is turning to even more shit before so it's got us both seriously considering to get the hell out. It'll be hard on my wife being separated from her family but she also knows it is likely for the best.
