I'm not sure why I'm asking this, since I'll never get to move there, but how long does a driver's license last in Japan? I heard that it's insanely expensive to get one in Japan, but if you already have a driver's license from America, they'll just give you a driver's license in Japan for free. But the question is, how long does it take to expire?

I don't have a question, but I am incredibly jelly :(

Me and my fiance might consider honeymooning in glorious sunriseland Nihon. I really just want to live there though, but I know there's no way either of us could get jobs there, which I know is required if you want a worker's residency.

That, and my Japanese is getting rusty from lack of use...

hey man best of luck, being an English teacher in Japan is easier than you think

Eh, maybe to an extent. I've found a lot of Japanese people from my generation are interested in / want to make friends with westerners. But the culture there is such that Japanese girls aren't just gonna come up to you and make a move. Also the culture/language barrier is a huge thing that makes pursuing those kinda relationships very difficult. But I mean hey, if you're a good looking white dude and you're just trying to get with chicks at some club in Tokyo then I guess you have pretty good chances. But overall different people are people and they all like and appreciate different things and I've never found any of these types of generalizations to hold true tbh.

Probably not the answer you're looking for but hey lmao

It can be insanely expensive if you start from scratch. Typically, you go to a driving school for about two months minimum in order to get your license. Driving school is typically around $3000. Now, I should mention that nobody actually has to take driving school. You can just take the tests once you hit a certain age. But there's a lot of minutia in those tests, and that makes it difficult to pass without having gone through the school.

But if you already have a license, you can use it for a limited period of time as-is (I think it's from about three to six months, but I forget the exact duration). You can also apply for an international license, which lasts longer. Alternatively, you can go get your license transferred to a Japanese one. It's not free, but it's also not all that expensive either (I think maybe $100 at the most). The duration of a Japanese license depends on some factors, but you'd be looking at 3 or 5 years before you have to renew.

From what I've seen they actually like him, especially the older generation. I went to some seminar about how he won the election at my school and at the end some Japanese man stepped up to the podium and said how he wished they had leadership like Trump in Japan or something.

Obviously that's just one anecdote but yeah lol. Japan's government is pretty authoritarian so I'm sure that has something to do with it.

Actually, no.
I have been living in Japan 12 years now, and have friends and business associates in age ranges from the 30s to 70s, and it is rare to find anyone that likes Trump. He's also ridiculed on TV and in the news (though to a lesser degree when he's visiting Japan like this past week). It's also a stark difference from the opinion that most Japanese people had about Obama, and even Bush (cannot speak for pre-Bush).

In my experience, outside of the occasional nationalist, most of Japanese adults either don't like Trump or just kind of indifferent to him. Kids and teens just kind of think he's funny, but don't typically hold many strong opinions about him.

Well it's definitely more mainstream, despite people on the internet telling you "hurr it's just as weird to most Japanese people as it is here". Anime adverts line the sides of buildings, public transportation, etc. Anime characters are used to sell products just as much as celebrities are here. It's probably a stretch to say that most people watch a little bit of it, but it's definitely way more mainstream.

Anime in general is something that people who like it watch, and people who don't won't really pay it much mind. If you are obviously an obsessive fan of anime, they'll be a bit taken aback, but if you just watch anime then nobody really cares. That said, anime isn't really something that everyone watches at least a little of. Kids and teens might watch some of the morning anime, but they aren't typically something most adults really want to watch. The kind of anime that might interest older audiences air late a night, and a lot of them might just go to sleep or something. College students are the group that would most fit into the "everyone watches at least a little" category.

Manga, on the other hand, is something that most Japanese people have read at least a little of.

I didn't really have any in Tokyo, but when I went to Hokkaido I got some cause they're very famous for it, and it was delicious. Very light and fluffy; I don't think they use cream cheese. Definitely not like the cheesecake we have here.

Yes. Though there are relatively few and getting fewer, there are indeed restaurants that expressly refuse service to foreigners. There is also a collection of foreigners in Japan who go around trying to expose these restaurants to varying degrees of success.

There are also similar signs that require all clients to speak Japanese, or those that will only accept foreigners if accompanied by a native.

I always tried to order food in the best Japanese I could but English is almost always fine, especially at fast food joints. I wouldn't worry too much, worst case you can just point to the picture lol. Definitely try it out if you want to see the differences between their McDonald's and ours, or want to try the teriyaki big mac, but I'd definitely recommend eating at local places above fast food.

Jk, in seriousness, seafood is a staple of the cuisine, but you can get by without eating it. Just eat a shitton of ramen, tonkatsu, hibachi, or whatever else tickles your fancy. Don't expect to walk into a sushi restaurant for them to have alternative options tho.
