pretty easy if you're trying, I had a girlfriend most of the time I was there so don't take my word for it

yes

best - they always switch the music to english/american music when you walk into restaraunts/bars
worst - idk, i've been barred entry from a bar in golden gai once and stopped by police to ask for my passport once other than that I haven't really faced any discrimination

I was in Tokyo for most of my time. As long as you can speak SOME conversational language, you'll be okay. Even then if you're just going for a week trip or so you'll be fine. If you're out in the country you'll have a more difficult time.

Why not?

I had some Japanese friends while I was there but honestly I never really put in that much effort and turned down enough invitations so that nothing really blossomed.

I got complacent with the friends/other American students there from my school. Probably my biggest regret of the whole thing.

I've been seriously thinking about going to Japan for years, so I've got a few questions...

Is there a good sense of community out there? How welcoming are they to people like us?

Is it easy to get western food?

And also, is it really as safe as they say??

I'm not sure I understand your first question. Community between who? People are generally very welcoming and polite and I've met a lot that have taken an interest in me/want to talk to me just because I'm a gaijin lmao. That still doesn't mean it's necessarily easy to make friends, but my sitatuation was a little different because I went to an American school so all the Japanese people obviously wanted to or at least were indifferent to making friends with non-Japanese people.

In Tokyo yes, there's everything. I had a great soul food place run by a black couple from Atlanta right by me as well as a Mexican restaurant.

Definitely, I've never once felt unsafe or heard of anyone I know in a bad situation. All my female friends say they feel totally fine walking around alone at night.

What I mean is, do people do things together rather than alone? Because something I hate about where I live is people shut themselves in their room, and never come out. It's very lonely. I want to live somewhere where people actually mix and do things together.

Btw, thanks for your answers to my other questions, massive help.

who? gaijin? locals? I mean I could sit here and talk generalizations all day but there are people of all different personalities anywhere you go fam. There are plenty of social people, but don't think a group of cool dudes is just gonna show up at your doorstep and ask you to come hang out.

In Minato, so yeah right by Roppongi. But honestly if you're only there for a short vacation I would highly recommend branching out food or otherwise, you don't realize how fast the time goes ):

Im going to Japan next week for 1 week. I dont speak a lick of japanese. My itinerary includes Hakone, Kyoto, Nagoya, and tokyo. I've already got my JP rail voucher whatever.

I'm planning on downloading every language app I can. There are some apps that can read Japanese and translate it to english.

Will I be fine with just the apps? Anything else I need to know? My wife and I are taking 2 large backpacks, we plan to move around alot. Maybe store luggage at the lockers at the train stations while we're out for the day. Also any particular eating places or interesting places that we must see? I definitely want to see the Yamazaki distillery.

Honestly the apps are super helpful, and I'd go as far to say that you don't even need them in most cities. Google translate is enough, download the Japanese language pack for it so you can have instant translations from pictures without wifi. Signs are always in English, especially for train stations and such. Don't sweat it. As for eating places, you can spend hours on the internet googling the best restaurants in Japan but honestly everyone does that. It's hard to really find a bad meal, due to the overall quality and expectations there are so much higher whether you're serving food or doing whatever so just explore. Go in to a smokey little ramen shop and a random corner sushi bar or a lively izakaya or something you can't go wrong.

I mean, you always have to "try". I'm like a pretty average looking dude but i don't think you're going to get approached by women whether you're Japanese or white because that's pretty atypical in their scene

absolutely, Tokyo ramen is probably the thing I miss the most.

there was this 24/7 ramen shop by my apartment that was always there for me whether I was coming back from school or coming home drunk or just couldn't sleep and it was so homey and delicious and soul-warming and it was always the same guy and he called me john-kun I miss it so much

not literally every day but probably a couple times a week

nope! when I finally found some guys that wanted to go with me we walked around akihabara for hours but they were all closed cause it was 2 am lol. One guy was like "yeah this is a maid cafe come in" but it was very uncomfortable bc when we walked in it was clearly just one of those "girls bars" that salarymen pay to talk to and fondle women and the owner/pimp guy was trying to get them to do that us but they didn't speak any English or anything lol. I felt so bad for them we just ran out without paying >_>

I don't have a question, but I am incredibly jelly :(

Me and my fiance might consider honeymooning in glorious sunriseland Nihon. I really just want to live there though, but I know there's no way either of us could get jobs there, which I know is required if you want a worker's residency.

That, and my Japanese is getting rusty from lack of use...
