I was driving just then going the speed limit and this car in front of me was trying to merge below the speed limit and by the time he was moving over to my lane my car was in line with his car. Then I had to speed up to let him in, then he flipped me off.

All you really need to do is keep proper spacing. If someone has trouble merging into safely spaced traffic it is their fault.
When merging into the freeway you line up with a gap and match the flow of traffic.

Depends on the situation. I usually will, but if I can speed up and they can just go behind me I will do that. In a highway traffic jam situation it's kosher to do the let one car in ahead of you, then the car behind lets one in etc etc... someone always fucks it up though.

This mostly. I just switch to the left lane when coming up on a off ramp and switch back over

Yeah. I live in a big city with a ton of highways so you get used to the unwritten freeway rules. It's annoying, but it's just easier to be nice. Merging is a matter of fact situation. It's shifting lanes when traffic is really congested yet still moving pretty fast that is a little more heart stopping. Sometimes you'll get some guy coming fast out of nowhere.

This. But it in the case you described, he was an ass. You were fine and shouldn't have slowed to let him in.

I tend to do this, but you better be going at least 10 over the speed limit, otherwise you're a different type of asshole.

If someone is trying to merge and it's easier for me to let them in than to keep them on the ramp/shoulder, then I'll let them in. If we're side by side, I'll sometimes get into the left lane to open up a spot for them. The real fun comes on shared ramps, where one man's entrance is another man's exit - always fun trying to squeeze into those during traffic.

What are you supposed to do when the on-ramps are short and have to slow down or stop before merging?

Some of the highways around here are ridiculous. We have a short on-ramp followed by an exit-ramp thats incredibly close. So you have people trying to merge on and off in a very small area.

395 into DC near Arlington, VA is notorious for this. it's an old branch of the interstate that has steeply curved on ramps and little to no merge lanes. it's life or death merging onto that thing at speed

Fortunately traffic near DC moves around 0.5 MPH because of congestion.

If there is a sign that says "Left lane closed ahead, merge, 1 mile" and they keep on driving and then the sign says "left land closed ahead, merge, 1/2 mile" and they keep on driving and then you see the FUCKING CONES AND THEY TRY TO MERGE! FUCK THAT!!!

For my own safety and just courtesy, i always adjust myself to the surrounding. When ever i see cars on the slip roads coming onto the motorway, i will move to middle lane if possible. Loads of people do that for me too. Maybe i live in the rural area of britain and most people are nicer drivers than the city.

And you never know some blind bastard or old fella who cant see u in the mirror and crashes into you. There are blind spots you cant see in the mirror and them old people might be not have the spacial awareness or just dont look over their shoulder.

So I always make sure there is a space for them. Either slow down and let them in, move over to the middle lane or speed up so you go pass them before the actual merge.

Wrong. It's all the assholes moving in at the last second that causes it to be stopped traffic. Once you get past the actual closed lane, cars start moving normal again. It's all because of people like you that it gets backed up for miles.

No. You get over when there's a dynamic place. If everyone waits for the LAST SECOND it's no good, but if everyone merges immediately it's worse. The lane is open for awhile to be used. When people use it, the flow of traffic is better. That's not an opinion, it's a well documented fact that has had plenty of testing.

As you said, if there's a place to get over then you get over.

But if you see traffic already backing up and you just ride that lane and expect to be let over at the end then NOPE!

If the merger and the mergee both try to get out of each other's way it's possible they will both slow down or speed up.

That's why the driving manual, in it's infinite wisdom says its the mergers job to figure it out.

Too bad nobody reads the manual and they'll give a license to everyone

People are supposed the use the lane, but they're not supposed to honk and rage into someone. On the other side, you're supposed to try maintaining speed, but if there's room for someone to slip in, you're not supposed to speed up to the bumper of the car in front of you to vindictively block someone.
