Well Catalonia is a semi-automonous region of Spain with its own language. They want to separate from Spain because they are getting gouged with taxes and they are not getting their money back. Spain and basically evey major European country won't recognize the country despite an overwhelming majority of Catalons wanting to separate. Bunch of poop heads!

Oh, how long has this been happening? Is Catalonia a particularly richer region? How is the infrastructure doing? Why can't they petition the government for more of their money back? What is Spain's response to all of this, in particular the accusations of the lack of infrastructure?

Do all regions with their own language get to become their own country?

The refusal of Spain to let it go is stupid. This strife is fucking ancient and it goes to show you that peace solves fuck-all when seeking independence.

How long? I dunno since the 1400s with the Kingdoms of Aragon and Castille? Catalonia is a richer region. Spain is basically doing everything possible to keep the country together short of civil war. Maybe regions with its own languages should be their countries... I mean country is a group of people with their own language/culture/economy/etc

1. it was nowhere near the overwhelming majority.
2. It was an illegal vote.
3. Leaving spain means leaving the EU too, so enjoy that 70+ billion debt with no trade deals to speek off.
4. They aren't getting "gouged with taxes". They're slightly richer people whining that they have to help out the poorer.

So refusing to let go of a territory which legally belongs to your country that makes up 20% of your GDP is stupid? Okay.

Their area is far better run than other places, which is one reason they pay significantly more taxes than the rest of the nation. That's in addition to a long history of brutal repression.
