I've complained a lot about interviews and applications, but I don't know about this one!

First of all: What the fuck is with the posting date? I'll do searches frequently (like every day or couple days) and the same positions will keep popping up as "new" each time. Sometimes I'll save a "new" job, but then when I look at my saved jobs it's listed as several weeks old on the search site (but I even doubt the accuracy of this, and good luck finding the date on the company's actual career site).

Then there's the duplicates you get in the same search. Sometimes I'll have to scroll through entire pages that are the same couple jobs from one company.

The location can be fucked up too. I've gotten results for Aurora, CO that are actually Aurora, IL, and lately I've had results show up for Nederland, CO that are actually in the Netherlands.

How is this technology so shitty? And it's not even the worst part! Compared to the technology used to submit applications, the search technology seems pretty advanced.

Job searching definitely does suck. I never noticed the same positions popping up, but my first guess is that some companies continuously pull and repost their listings so that they show up at the top of the list or something.

Maybe. I think it's also partly a technology issue. Although I do see "sponsored" ads sometimes and it's funny to me that I'll even hear ads from companies like Indeed touting sponsored ads. Well, it would be funny if it wasn't just contributing more to the problem. Instead of sponsoring ads, that money would be better spent on a better application system and HR people who could actually write a job description that a reasonable person could meet.

hate job sreaching with a passion- done it most of my working life.

pro trip: its not what you know... but who you know - "I've heard this before I already know I get sick of hearing this!"

its worth repeating, because its so true. Word of mouth hiring in today's society is STILL the best way of getting in. I've read and found its the "weak links" (people you barely know) that help you the most. start stretching your own personal network in your field.

and know why your going for what you want... or you might as well get any job

and stay away from linkedin.... waste of time. check craigslist or indeed

They can re-post job listings that have been around for a while, I think.

The "who you know" thing doesn't make sense to me. What I gather from that advice is that you're only supposed to bother trying to get in companies where you can have some form of contact, but that is so limiting. I've applied to tons of great companies and, from what I'm best able to tell, I don't have any sort of mutual contact and there are no alumni who work there who can even tangentially be considered a connection to those companies.

Connections are nice if you happen to have them and luck out that they're with a good company for you, but you can't materialize connections out of thin air. It's just really discouraging when you read job advice and they make it sound like you're some kind of failure if you don't have an in with every company you're interested in. Though personally, even when I have tried applying/looking with companies where I have a connection, it hasn't helped at all.

Also craigslist is shit for jobs. I get the sense Indeed is too but I haven't really used it

Yes they can, that's one of the great things about linkedin. If there's a certain company you're interested in, type in the search bar "recruiter at 'X Company'"

All recruiters are not bad. Yes there are a ton of shitty ones but your message/approach to them can land you an interview. I have had this happen often and it's depressing because you begin to realize that sending in resumes via online portals will most likely lead you to nowhere. That is one of the most disturbing realizations I hate about job searching

Job searching definitely sucks, hell even with a "desirable" degree I'm learning there are a shit ton of shitty jobs in the real world. What's worse is companies will have HR post fake good reviews on a site known as glassdoor and trick people into thinking their company is great when in reality it's shit.

I think that is why word of mouth/not what you know but who you know is superior and needs to be reiterated again. Sometimes you will work so hard at getting an interview, that when the time comes and you get it you are so disappointed by the workplace or even job

Network your ass off. You really, really want other people's opinion and by other people I mean everybody not in HR

Aren't you too? Or at least shouldn't you be?

I've already tried this approach. Maybe not enough, but it didn't work that well for me. For starters, you have to have premium on LinkedIn to message somebody you aren't connected with. And even then, good luck finding the right person in a company that's big enough to have several people with the same title in the same office. Most of the ones I messaged when I tried this didn't respond or just gave a generic "k thanks we'll keep your resume on file"
