Bluemonk this is a random question but how old are you

You can PM if you don't want to post publicly (or if you don't want to tell me at all that's cool too)

I'm 24 and feel like I'm a bit behind the curve with credit cards. I just got my Chase Freedom Unlimited and am really liking it. But I have this friend of mine who is also 24 and she's a LOT like you when it comes to gushing over the Chase programs. She has at least 3 cards from the Chase family and gets all these rewards and I'm like bruuhh I don't even think I could find $4k of things to buy to get the 50k points from Sapphire Reserve/Preferred if I decided to sign up for that one too (she signed up when the bonus was 100k points)

It's amazing the sheer amount of points you can get from all these cards. I just stumbled upon Shop Through Chase too. Extra 10% from Macy's got me to finally order new tennis shoes that I've been putting off for months.

Having multiple credit cards increases the total amount of credit you have. Which helps with having a lower utilization rate.

The age of the accounts also matters, but since utilization is a big piece of the puzzle having a lot of open credit cards isn't necessarily a bad thing for credit score.

im 29. turning 30 next year. which is why im going to hard on all these point-gaming cards. im celebrating my 30th with a big trip to korea. business class flight, luxery hotel, etc.

and i dont think you should feel down about not getting on this train. like you said, if your spend is not enough to meet the card bonuses, then you dont need to do it. right now, i need more SPG cards. theres a SPG business card that gives you 35000 points, but only after 10k spend. i know i dont have the ability to meet that just yet (cuz my previous method, paying rent via Plastiq.com, just got shut down) so im not gonna do it.

but, that doesnt mean you can't work on getting your score up. there are plenty of lower-tier cards that are easy to get that have good rewards, like the Citi DoubleCash, the Chase Freedom/Freedom Unlimited, and the Amex Everyday cards. the last 2 have sign up bonuses of only like 500 dollars so its easier to hit.

get those, and then later when you have more income then getting the premium cards will be no problem. my credit score was a mess before i hit the chase cards. i had 18 missed payments on a student loan account lol. but since i had a chase credit card from 2012 when i applied, they knew i wasn't a risk since i always made those payments (plus paid lots of interest to them. but ive turned that around lol).

No one has an issue at 815, so unsure how you will "have an easier time". Also, my credit history is 17 years including a mortgage and several vehicle loans.

^Sounds about right. Establishing credit history is more than just number of cards. Only credit card I have is a CSP but given my limit on that, income, car loans, etc, I know I can get any other mainstream card that I want at any time.

Actually, what I did was take out small personal loans (~$10,000), never spent a dime, and paid it back at twice the minimum. It cost me a little interest, but my credit score went up quickly.

well you didn't say that <_<

lol but even so, there are some places like chase, who wont give you a card unless someone else has given you a credit limit above what they would give you. amex, on the other hand, throws cards around left and right.

but i mean 17 year credit history will probably get you the card. <_<

i can help you with chase. chase won't give you a card if you have more than 5 new cards in the last 24 months. the slate is affectd by this, but the amazon isn't. you can only apply for 2 chase chards in a 30 day period, so you should be good there. only other thing i can think of is that they don't want to extend credit to a new customer if they dont see someone else already have done that. do you have any other cards?

if not, what you can do is hang up and call again. sometimes a new rep will be nicer. and if they question why you're calling back, just say you weren't satisfied by the last answer you got. this usually works. not with bank of america though, they'll just hound you for calling over and over. chase doesnt care.

yeah call again.

also you can call this number: 800-432-3117

a robot will tell you about your application status.

if it says 30 days, then they haven't even looked at it and the rep was right lol.
if it says 2 weeks, 99% you're approved
if it says 7-10 days, its likely denied so give recon a call.

Here's the flowchart of what bluemonk provided (that he also provided to me when I was applying).

Worked like a charm. It switched to 7-10 days so I called the line and the lady was like "yeah let me just verify your ID so I can recommend you for approval" and that was that. Didn't have to plead my case or anything like that.

gotcha. if you can't get the slate cuz chase doesn't want to give you more cards, then i suggest a Discover It card. 0% apr for 18? months and its a really good card. might be hard to find places to use it.

either that or the amex every day cards. those are easy to get and have 0%apr for the first year.

for amex you can use this to see if you're pre approved:
https://www.americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/check-for-offers/

but generally if you have a SSN and a pulse they'll give you a card.

100 percent. Closing your accounts actually hurts your score. Having more accounts looks good.

People on CE are dumb, you see them hating and acting dumb because they don't know anything

Instead of using debit cards and cash you use credit cards. At the end of the month pay it off, you're rewarded with free cashback on your purchases and rewards. I just started 2 cards and have about 30 bucks cashback on each, partnered with promos on Amazon for example. I used 2 promos and got Mario O for 25. Just got an aviator red, spent 90 bucks on the annual fee and one purchase of anything and I got 60k air miles(600 dollars worth of air miles)
