Obesity rates in the U.S. have hit a new high, and public health experts are renewing calls for an aggressive shift in strategy one that would change the food environment through initiatives such as soda taxes, rather than just focusing on behavior.

Nearly four out of 10 U.S. adults were considered obese in 2015-2016, a 30% increase from 1999-2000, according to recent research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics.

The individual choice model for obesity prevention is not working, said Sara Benjamin Neelon, an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and director of the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion.

Traditionally, public health efforts have centered on communicating messages about what is healthy in the hopes of changing people's behavior, Neelon said. But just telling people how to eat better does not equal behavior change. That's part of the problem."

"It is a concern to see such a high prevalence of obesity," said Craig Hales, the studys lead researcher and a medical epidemiologist at the CDC. Obesity is a risk factor for health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some cancers, he said.

I'll say the core issue is more that the FDA demonized fats which allowed the sugar industry to put sugar into everything so things didn't taste like shit. We need to reverse that more than soda taxes(not that soda is really that good for you), because it won't really solve the issue of people eating too much and not getting enough exercise.

Lol, but seriously shouldn't be taxing stuff like soda. Just fucks everyone who has any sense of self control. Politicians aren't usually the smartest people either, and usually get behind something to look productive for re-election. Most of them are old and look like shit too. They shouldn't be deciding what food is healthy and what isn't and taxing it.

Should make health insurance premiums sky high for obese people. Go broke being fat or you won't make enough to get fat.

Levying reasonable additional taxes on things that the government wants to disincentivize is not uncommon and is certainly not "forcing" people to do anything.

Do you also have a big problem with the item-specific taxes that are assessed on things like cigarettes and alcohol, @C_Pain ?

There's really nothing the government can truly do to change this behavior. It's just going to be something that happens generationally, as how tobacco consumption has trended downward in the last 10 or so years.

This isn't as much the FDA's fault as much as it is people being too stupid to do their own homework and not being intelligent enough to have the slightlest control over what they put in their mouth.

Whatever as long as it isn't government regulation playing nanny with our citizens. How about they do something with the soda companies instead of taxing citizens?

This tax will actually likely lower the amount of soda brought as it's pretty cheap currently. The bigger issue is this doesn't change all the sugar in foods elsewhere. And sugar is the main issue.

It's more of a combination of the sugar industry lobbying for things that made fats look bad in order to get sugar sales up while the FDA went along with it.

The thing is obesity rates tended upwards as we started to lose fats in foods and replaced those fats with sugar. And while it might be the fault on people still buying into fats are bad, it's still up to the FDA to properly regulate foods being put on the market for public health which they currently are not doing very well regards to sugar and obesity.

100% agree. Things like white bread, chips, candy, pasta sauces/salad dressings are loaded with sugar are the culprit. And how things like fat, red meat, eggs (back in the 80's/90s) were demonized along with that idiotic food pyramid.

I would definitely start with altering the menu of available items for school lunches, particularly free lunch.

Typically how politics works. Much harder to solve bribery and corruption in politics rather than educate people and tell them if they're eating fat free cookies to lose weight, they're doing it wrong.

Actually.... maybe that is just as hard of a problem to solve based on pervious history lol.

Tbf, it's less that people are stupid and more that they learned faulty information(I.E food pyramid) growing up and it's much harder to reteach people stuff they learned incorrectly.

You can teach kids this better than adults, but their diets are largely going to be controlled by their parents anyways so it won't make a huge impact.

Chicago just tried this and it was a resounding failure.

You know how they have that narrative that people go to Indiana to get guns? Well they legit went to Indiana to get soda, stores started losing tons of money and they reversed the tax within 3 months.

The point is that people will get the soda regardless. They were willing to travel 30+ miles to get untaxed soda. If they can't travel to get it, they're just going to pay the price.

Truth be told, they didn't even really save because of the gas and time commitment involved.

The solution is so straight forward that I don't understand why they haven't implemented it yet. Just everyone who is overweight. The only exceptions would be bodybuilder a because their extra weight is muscle. Nobody would want to pay the extra taxes and they'd try harder to keep weight off. They could even have something in the law that says the tax increases for you year after year if you remain overweight.

I think the focus should be on stopping severe/extreme obesity at this point, I think we are well past the tipping (I swear to god no pun intended) point in much of the so called developed world most people will be overweight the key is limiting being overweight to the point of limiting day to day function somebody 25 pounds overweight can live fairly healthy, somebody 100 pounds over not so much.
