They got the look right and the atmosphere at the beginning, but once the real game gets going, it loses absolutely all of the fun value. It's simply too hard and I'm man enough to admit that.

I played on Hard because the game said that's how it's meant to be played. Once I reached a wall, I lowered it to normal... and then to easy... nothing at all seemed to change though. It was still too hard, and there was no fun factor at all.

A horror game needs to have ebb and flow. You need safe sections to balance out the horror. Once I got into the shit with Alien, it was just this presence always there in every area, so there was no safe place to explore and you have no weapons to actually do anything to it. It's just this repeating die, die, die loop. It isn't scary, just keep playing the same sections over and over and over and over again until you manage to find the special way to creep through and avoid the Alien.

Not that I'm a pro gamer or anything but I play most games on Hard mode these days. I have a feeling that all the praise it got from people is not experts who are way better than me. I think it's basically they played the opening parts before the difficulty starts and then they gave up, and then sang its praises of there finally being a good Alien game. There isn't though.

How are you playing the game? If you're sprinting through the halls and bumping into things, like you would in most FPSs, the Alien will always hear you and attack. However, if you crouch-walk and move deliberately, the Alien will typically ignore you even if its audibly patrolling the ducts above you.

I beat the game on the hardest difficulty and did not have the problems you're experiencing. There are a few staged areas where you have to be in the same room/hall as the alien, but you have control most of the game.

You can for everything. Granted disabling the alien only extends to distracting it. Other Humans die easily, Androids are obnoxiously durable, and the Alien is like a giant cat.

I had no way of disabling it. There was a DLC thing that was with characters from the original movie where they equipped me with a flame thrower, but I certainly had nothing like that in the real game.

And speaking of humans, they claim they're just minding their business and won't bother me if I leave them alone. Yeah, bullshit. Every human attacked on site whenever I ended up in the same room as them.

You can "disable" the alien with the flamethrower, but the lack of fuel on higher difficulties doesn't allow this to be a reliable substitute for stealth. It's for emergency situations where you're fucked and need a lifeline.

Every other threat can be permanently disabled, but it's also more hassle than it's worth for many of them. This is NOT a FPS.

Flares, Noisemakers, Flashbangs all cause the alien to investigate. It doesn't sound like you're that far into the game. The Medical Bay is probably the most intense part of first half of the game, if you are where I think you are.

You definitely just played for an hour and then gave up. There are plenty of no-Alien segments and human/android only segments. It takes a bit, but there are a few ways to distract and chase away the Alien once you get into it. It's about stealth and resource management.

You must have been stuck on that one section for a really long time then.

Like what were you doing when the Alien is around? What was your tactic? Why were you failing?

The game has a logic and clearly you weren't learning it.

It sounds like TC was impatiently sprinting down corridors and getting wrecked by the alien over and over again. That's the only way to experience what he's describing.

Yeah I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt here, but if they've played for 10 hours and haven't even gotten the flamethrower then there is something fantastically wrong with what is happening.

I was not.

So I got to the part where you had to do some shit in some room, and then when you come back the Alien comes out of a grate on the ceiling, right? And you gotta get past it, get back to that guy who said he would help you. I spent a couple hours dying over and over at that part across different days. It's such a pain in the ass.

Then I got to the next section with a bunch of robots and eventually just said fuck this game.

I played on Normal and throwing a noise maker into another room and sneaking to a new area and just advancing until I was safe was a pretty safe tactic for most of the game. Eventually I had enough flamethrower ammo and I blitzed through the ending sections.

Eh, I played Hard my first time through and didn't have a huge amount of trouble. You just need to be smart with your supplies and don't go gung-ho trying to kill everything. Sometimes, avoiding combat is the best route.

The Alien can be annoying, but it's also kind of random. Sometimes it shows up a lot, sometimes it doesn't. The alien is more frustrating then scary after a while, I'll admit, and it can get predictable. The Working Joes were a lot scarier to me than that thing.

FYI I've beaten the game on Nightmare, and THAT is intense. Every time I spent a bullet or crafted an item, I hoped it wasn't a mistake that I would regret later on. That was true survival horror. Your supplies are very limited. On that note, I think the biggest thing difficulty effects IS how many supplies you get, and not how durable you or the enemies are, though that is also affected to some extent.
