In today's example of college stupidity:

https://www.campusreform.org/?ID=10005

A math education professor at the University of Illinois argued in a newly published book that algebraic and geometry skills perpetuate unearned privilege among whites.

Rochelle Gutierrez, a professor at the University of Illinois, made the claim in a new anthology for math teachers, arguing that teachers must be aware of the politics that mathematics brings in society.

On many levels, mathematics itself operates as Whiteness. Who gets credit for doing and developing mathematics, who is capable in mathematics, and who is seen as part of the mathematical community is generally viewed as White, Gutierrez argued.

Gutierrez also worries that algebra and geometry perpetuate privilege, fretting that curricula emphasizing terms like Pythagorean theorem and pi perpetuate a perception that mathematics was largely developed by Greeks and other Europeans."

Math also helps actively perpetuate white privilege too, since the way our economy places a premium on math skills gives math a form of unearned privilege for math professors, who are disproportionately white.

Are we really that smart just because we do mathematics? she asks, further wondering why math professors get more research grants than social studies or English professors.

Stay the fuck out of my STEM. You can bitch all you want about whiteness and privilege in subjects that can afford that level of stupidity, but when you weaken the rigors of STEM, people die. I don't want my structural engineer or medical doctor learning about how their skin color makes them bad people. I want them to learn how to build a bridge and perform surgery without killing people.

There is a debate on this. I was introduced to it after reading "Mathematics for the Nonmathematician" which primarily serves as a light history of math text. The book is decades old but some criticism of it is the author's love affair with Europeans while downplaying Egyptians (pretty much calling them simpletons, I posted a screenshot of the text in cechat once), Middle Easterners, and the Chinese

Definitely not satire. There is severe insecurity among social science academia, mostly likely because many of them know they've dedicated their life to peddling nonsense while their academic peers in STEM fields are making meaningful and substantive contributions to the world. Was only a matter of time before someone articulated stupidity like this.

This is sadly not the first professor to make these kinds of comments, either.

That explains a lot, actually. I mean, imagine putting so much time and effort and money into building up a framework of lunacy and nonsense, and then realizing that your framework doesn't actually solve any problems in reality.

only a white man would come up with a shape as stupid as a parallelogram. a parallelogram is a shape that is borne out of concepts of privilege and unequal power structures.

a PoC (Person of Color) mathematician would historically have create da shape that is practical and necessary due to their diminished social stance in the world, such as a rectangle or triangle - powerful, sturdy shapes. Their shapes are created not out of curiosity but out of necessity, and unfortunately the reality is that we cannot achieve significant progress by focusing just on necessity.

A white (or white-presenting) mathematician, on the other hand, is able to create a shape such as a parallelogram, a shape with no real-world application and no foundation in reality. No building will ever be a parallelogram, no city designed in those dimensions. It is a shape entire constructed to take advantage of decades of oppression and prejudice.

If we were to deduce the area of a parallelogram, it would be something like this:

Area = (Power) (Privilege)

Every time I see a parallelogram, I feel sick to my stomach as I see yet another attempt of the white man to enforce his imperialistic tendencies over yet another field.

The SJW arena has become like the Super Mario Brothers speedrunning community. It's so hard and competitive to keep one-upping other previous record holders that in order to get attention, you need to be really creative with your stupidity nowadays.

And surely this will end well for society.
