I wouldn't spend more than $400 on a laptop. I never use the 2 I already have

i spent $780 on a "gaming" laptop

it does pretty good for that price range and the games it can play. my only bottleneck is not having a SDD yet for it.

I'm in the "don't spend too much on a laptop" crowd. If you want power, spend the money on a desktop. If you want a portable laptop, just choose something reasonably priced that works.

It's a horrible investment just in general dollar sense. But I usually spend 1,000 - 1,300 on a laptop because I use it so much.

It really depends what it's for.

If you already have a desktop, I'd spring for a cheaper (less than a thousand) ultrabook. They're super slim and the form factor is convenient for things like school or work. I have an asus zenbook and love it.

If you want to game on it, you'd probably have to spend at least a thousand. Just know gaming laptops tend to be heavy bricks with poor battery life and become dated pretty fast. You could build a brand new desktop and buy a barebones laptop for the same budget as a gaming laptop and still get more performance/dollar + a device for portability.

They do have gaming laptops that are much more powerful or otherwise fit in powerful specs in a smaller form factor, but you'd be spending an arm and a leg.

If you are just doing that get a cheaper laptop. Unless you are doing something else that requires a lot of CPU or GPU power.
