Because when 90% of your staff leaves, your options are to just let it burn down or attempt to rebuild. One is much easier (and also likely more profitable)

Also it seems there was a gut reaction by some of the moderation staff to try and cover up the controversy that drove a pretty sharp wedge between other mod staff members and convinced them that they couldn't keep working there and not be seen as supporting some shit. Amidst all that things got very public very quickly on twitter and surrounding social media, and it quickly became clear there was no soft reboot option. They would need to start over again without all that baggage.

Now imagine trying to sell a forum largely derided as an echo chamber more interested in chasing away anyone outside the hive mind and you realize, you don't have a good product to sell. --- ...
