Tried a few factions -- the main problem below happens for all of them.
Normal mode, guess that's called prince. Big map, lots of civs, balanced. Normal speed/research, time victory turned off, rest is vanilla. Vox Populi mod functioning correctly. Whenever I start a game I pick a good spot to make my hometown, something with good fields + water access + resources, no wasted tiles. I'm making +5 gold a turn. A worker costs 290. I sent my scouts around to find people and ruins, and I find a crap ton of both, but most are culture or fame or stuff like that. +5 a turn. 290. By turn 45 I was still sending my one scout unit around the entire world, almost completed, just picking up ruins. I found civs with 3-4 extra cities, I found some forging empires against barbarians. I was almost ready to have my fist worker built, and when I could finally afford them, I saw it took another 9 turns to make. Barbarians came and burnt Rome and I lost. So uhhhhhh, I feel like I'm missing something here. First time playing Civ. --- Since only from below can one better see the heights. http://i.imgur.com/OhZgm.jpg ... Copied to Clipboard!

It shouldn't be taking you 45 turns to get your first worker.

You gotta plop your first city down in the first or second turn. Keep your warrior close by to protect your first worker, then build an archer. This should be enough to keep the barbarians at bay while you grow. That's all I got.

Maybe it's the mod I'm using that everyone recommended, vox populi. --- Since only from below can one better see the heights. http://i.imgur.com/OhZgm.jpg ... Copied to Clipboard!

Sounds like the mod?
I've never had an issue pumping out workers early game, provided you didn't create your capital in the middle of a wasteland --- I'm your huckleberry. ... Copied to Clipboard!

There's 2 ways to produce units:
Make them naturally via the cities production (which occurs over several turns, 9 sounds about right starting out) OR purchase them, which is an immediate action and drains your funds. You don't need both. Not familiar with the mod, but it sounds like you're waiting until you have the funds to Buy them, and then choosing to Build them. That said, workers are vital so those are usually the ~2nd thing I produce. Sometimes I'll make Scouts to pair up with my warriors and do some explorin', else it's a worker to get me some improved tiles and luxury goods. --- Remember that I won't rest, 'til we share the same tense Just know, to me, you're better late than never again. ... You should be building your worker, not buying one.

its been a while since ive played civ 6 and even longer since I played civ 5.
I was going to write a bunch of tips but then I googled something and found this http://www.carlsguides.com/strategy/civilization5/earlygamehelp.php And it seems to be pretty decent. Give that a read. Civ series isn't one that you can generally sit down and play well your first time in the series and first time in a specific game. I've been playing since Civ 2 and each game still takes a bit of a learning curve for me. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

You don't need both. This. Gold is used to buy a unit instantly whereas production takes a few turns. You're probably looking at the price of a worker in gold and then adding it to the production queue. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
