both new aliens suck. they made all the other races just palet swaps of humans, and the animation, story and dialogue sucked. Along with shitty characters.

Combat in 2 is better than 1, although 3's combat was best. 2 had easily the worst story in the series. Nothing important happens. They shouldn't have changed the story so much from their original plans after the lead writer left. It was supposed to be the geth who rebuilt Shepard, and the story would have been about the reapers, not a new thing with the collectors. The story in 2 just ended up dumb. It's all missions to build a team rather than actually driving the story of the war against the reapers.

Overall it did feel like one grand side quest.

If Bioware had went the extra mile and made Mass Effect 3 fully take into account all the decisions you made in the first two games, I think ME3 would have been even more amazing.

Of course it would have taken a lot of extra work but imagine if sparing the Rachni queen meant seeing them on the battlefield but also Reaper versions of them whereas killing the queen would have meant no more Rachni at all. The whole idea of the Reapers using a clone of the queen felt like a slap in the player's face when we had to made that decision long ago. Or keeping the Collector's base meant better weapons in ME3 but we're forced to deal with other issues.

For players who first played the series 10 years ago, I feel it would have been a rewarding experience to see all our decisions across the years make an actual gameplay difference in the end.

The character models and animations are a particular low point. You look at Sara Ryder, then compare her to Jayde Rossi (the actress she was modeled on), and you can see that they intentionally altered the face so it would be, as some might consider, less conventionally attractive. I don't hate the game, I just find it dull. The combat is adequate, but the story never really grabbed me.

The story is as follows (I will put spoilers in, but not sure it's actually applicable since most was made public)

Big corporations fund a private mission to colonize Andromeda. They build some big ships, and set out... then things go pear shaped. You-Ryder takes command and explores the galaxy looking to establish new colony worlds. If you heard the voice of Preston Garvey (Fallout 4), you are not alone. You meet up with an alien species, and become best bros with them. You help them fight the enemy, who it turns out are using POWs as genetic experiments, and converting them to their team. Like the Borg.

So, compared to an ancient A.I army purging all life in the galaxy thousands of times now focused on us, we get settlement building.
