The surge protector was useless, lightning struck right outside and my PC shut off and almost right away I smelled fried electronics, the PSU was really warm as well. With my luck it took the motherboard and more along with it.
I'm gonna pick up a cheap Corsair tomorrow and see if it boots but fuck my my life.
The best part is I had important things on there that were only partially backed up because I had filled my main backup external HDD and I have another one being delivered on Monday. How fun.

Well my broke ass is going without a PC for awhile. Anyone wanna chip in to the "get Gamer another PC fund?"

Yeah it was just bad storms and some lightning hit pretty much right outside the house. I had it on since last night downloading a bunch of shit since I have a monthly data cap that just reset yesterday/today so I had a backlog of stuff is been waiting to download, it didn't even cross my mind until the he power went out that I'd had it on :(

Do you live in an apartment? The city I live in requires rental insurance and while I'm not 100% certain something like this qualifies, you might be able to get your entire rig replaced depending on how favorable the deductible is.

And IIRC, they base reimbursement off of what you spent on the components at the time, not the obviously depreciated value from being a few generations old. If you spent 1k on a rig 5 years ago, you'll be able to build a rig today worth around 1k, which will obviously be much better.

Nope, and technically my homeowner's would cover it but that has a $2500 deductable which is more than the cost of the PC.

Surge protector doesn't protect you from the EMP of a lightning strike in close proximity. You're just fucked if that happens. Even if it's not plugged in. Has nothing to do with power lines at all.

A UPS is basically a battery bank you plug in and plug your PC into and if the power goes out it'll turn on and keep it powered until the electricity comes back or so you can safely power it down at least.
A surge protector is just one of these
2SeXLgQ
And protects electronics from electrical surges, or are supposed to at least.
