A conservative city in northwest Iowa is hosting its first pride festival to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Orange City will host the three-day OC Pride 2017 event starting Friday, the Sioux City Journal reported. The city has a population of about 6,200.

The festival will have dancing, live music, a movie screening, information booths, storytelling and brunch.

The event was arranged by Cody Bauer, Steve Mahr, David Klennert and Mike Goll. Bauer and Mahr are straight married men who view themselves as LGBTQ allies while Klennert and Goll are newlyweds.

"We've all wanted to do a pride in Orange City for a really long time," Bauer said.

Klennert proposed hosting the festival later in the year so it wouldn't detract from pride events across the country that are held in June, which is Pride Month.

The response to the event has been largely positive, organizers said.

Ya, it's a pretty big deal where I'm from actually. Most everyone in the city goes.

We actually have a whole week devoted to pride where I live. It's a lot of fun. Lots of events and good food all week.

Been to like 5 of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gra, and while I'm not a big fan of the nowadays I loved them shortly after I came out (even was on a float 2 times, my strip club had one then one of my sisters modelling companies a few years later).

Why aren't you fond of them nowadays?

Is it because you consider them redundant?

I've gone to the last couple years of my local one. Although, it's more of a small venue with a stage, booths, and merchants outdoors all related to gay pride rather than an actual parade.

A simple "I'm flattered, but I'm straight" should get them off you lol.

Nah, I think they've been insanely hijacked.

For example a group who I've personally helped wanted to have an Ex-Muslim gay float (for obviously gay guys and girls who grew up Muslim), the thing was "banned" from the event for being "offensive".
At a fucking GAY PRIDE event....and I've heard other stories, but that really rubbed me the wrong way.

Ah, I see.

Also I'm not against them as a whole, no, I think they do a lot of good.

But every single time I hear about gay rights groups caving to pressure from idiotic mad religions who are the very ones responsible for our persecution for centuries...it doesn't do much. Kinda like the idiotic LGBT groups that align themselves with someone like Linda Sarsour...really?
....then these same groups (in Australia anyway) wonder why I then make the point that the Church and Mosques have donated a considerable amount of money to the "no" vote (for gay marriage) - so we're supposed to respect these mad religious laws, but we're also supposed to shut up and not have the same rights, yeah no, that's not the type of shit that I know I actively argued for many times.

</rant>

I much prefer the ones that still try to be creative and aren't just the same old floats year after year, or even the ones that push the envelope like back when I was involved, the whole point back then was to get in peoples face and make the point that we weren't going anywhere.

Very well said, Gavi =)

I can't say I disagree with any of your sentiments.
