Thinking Out Loud is a legitimately fantastic song that reached that wedding popularity status as all good songs do

I legitimately can't stand the song anymore, it was enjoyable for what it is for like a few listens before it became insufferable to me. It's basic bitch cookie cutter love song material with no real legs to stand on imo.
And like I said I don't even think it's the best song like that of the decade, that would probably go to Mirrors by JT.

I agree completely, but that's why imo that one has legs to stand on while Thinking Out Loud doesn't, at least the production is stellar on Mirrors around the generic lyrics, Thinking Out Loud doesn't have that quality production but still has equally generic lyrics so it's just completely cookie cutter love song to me.

Idk, JT proved that him on guitar by himself is worse than Ed (Pair of Wings) so and Timbo has been doing this for forever, so I think citing the production on Mirrors is a bit unfair

Pharrell/Ed tracks even still had Ed on guitar so there was that extra bit of character in it anyway, JT only did guitar on one song IIRC

I don't really see what Pair of Wings has to do with this, yeah it's a shitty bonus track, but it doesn't really have anything to do with the topic at hand which is comparing Mirrors to Thinking Out Loud and you pretty much made my argument for me for why Mirrors is the better cliched love song of the two by acknowledging that the production on the track is incredible.
Both have equally generic lyrics and Ed combines that with an equally generic acoustic ballad instrumental whereas JT goes a far better way with it which gives his track at least some meat and potatoes to it so it has more than just the generic lyrics and generic instrumental that Ed's has.

I definitely agree that Pair of Wings is shit and he has his fair share of bad music out there too, especially some 20/20 Experience Part 2 material, but I don't see why the production of Mirrors should be disregarded because of it. And about him playing guitar and stuff I'm not arguing he's not talented, you could even argue he's more talented in terms of being an instrumentalists but talent doesn't inherently equal better quality music output from them. Those shitty singing competition shows are a good example of this, many of them can sing really well and when sometimes play instruments but even if they win they rarely actually break out into a music career because they can't actually make good music. Then you can compare that to some artists like Bob Dylan who has a pretty shitty voice and wouldn't have stood a chance on a show like that, who's one of the most critically acclaimed and beloved artists of all time because he's able to make good music with great lyrics despite not being the best vocalists or the best guitar player around.
