Anyone who cries this is a total dumbass.

Sorry to break it to you, but you don't own your culture. Because you didn't come up with it, someone who vaguely looked like you a long time ago did. And the fact that you think you're entitled to stop people who don't look like you from enjoying good things people came up with a long time before you were born is ignorant and racist as hell.

So go fuck yourself

Literally everything is cultural appropriation. I can't believe people use that as a legit cause to cry "racist!" or whatever.

I think in some contexts it makes sense, if the "appropriation" is dismissive and insulting and not adoptive.

Here's a great and fair comment about in talking in the contexts of fashion:
https://www.reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice/comments/6n1uwl/thursday_discussion_subcultures_and_authenticity/dk64298/

Whats the significance of the necklace youre about to put on: is it just jewelry or a set of prayer beads? Did the source community invite you to wear that traditional robe, perhaps via voluntary sale, and does the community still suffer from a history of exploitation, discrimination or oppression? And how similar is that designer adaptation to the original: a head-to-toe copy, or just a nod in the direction of silhouette or pattern?

So in short, do I think dreadlocks is a ridiculous thing to whine about? Yes. But do I think sometimes people are incredibly disrespectful to a culture and simply steal it for personal gain? Yes also.

Cultural appropriation is a prime example of the proverbial "slippery slope" becoming too slippery. Example:

the earliest T-shirt dates back to sometime between the 1898 SpanishAmerican War and 1913, when the U.S. Navy began issuing them as undergarments.[1] These were a crew-necked, short-sleeved, white cotton undershirt to be worn under a uniform. It became common for sailors and Marines in work parties, the early submarines, and tropical climates to remove their uniform jacket, wearing (and soiling) only the undershirt.[2]

tl;dr: You cannot wear a t-shirt because that's cultural appropriation; you're using an item that represents the proud US Navy for your own personal gain.

The cultural appropriation card can be pulled for virtually anything. If you ever need a reason to never have to take someone seriously, then wait for that person to cry cultural appropriation. Once they say that, you can check out mentally whenever they talk.

You make a good point and it's certainly true that it's hard to see how it would ever end, but this kind of dismisses certain things, for example how hollywood took native american headdresses and used them to ridicule and stereotype a people who were already driven from their homes and persecuted.

You could try walking around with blackface on, and if anyone says anything just tell them cultural appropriation doesn't exist. I wouldn't recommend it though.

Most cultural appropriation claims are pretty dumb.

But you have to recognize that there's at least something to it. Look at the long history of black musicians being denied recognition by mainstream audiences while some white guy comes along, takes the same style if not the same exact songs, and becomes famous and wealthy.

This is basically it for me. I think the necessary addendum though is "if it's invited", or "if it's encouraged".

I don't want to live in a world where culture isn't "allowed" to adapt or evolve because of different cultural influences, but I also think we should be aware of the difference between exploitation and adoption.
