Wtf does that even mean. If it's a new leaf, why I gotta turn it over? What's wrong with the side it's already on?

I can understand turning over an old leaf, because then you get the new untouched side, but a new leaf is untainted, it can be whatever it wants to be. Turning it over is just upping the change it accidentally tears or something.

Leaf = page in a book
So if you want to do something different you turn over the leaf to read a new page

The English language is full of phrases and idioms that don't exactly have to make complete logical sense. Partly because of how old it is as a language and partly because of just how many other languages it has liberally borrowed from over the years.

I personally think it's trying to just point to how temporal leaves themselves are on trees - they come out in the spring and fall in the autumn. So it's not very difficult to turn a new leaf - should give you some hope that you can make a quick change. But it's also a word that does point to pages in books, so that's another way to look at it I guess.
