The state language is listed as "American." Yes really. Granted today, American English is a totally different dialect, but it's still stupid.

I feel like that is or should be against Federal law.

The Constitution doesn't list a national language, nor does it delegate the power to assign one. And under the 9th Amendment that gives Kentucky the right to list it as whatever they want.

I feel like the whole freedom of speech/expression thing would suggest that making it illegal to speak in another language would be unconstitutional.

Yeah, but who the hell is going to take semantics to court? There are still laws on the books meant to stop women from driving in some places that no one bothers to enforce.

I actually had a teacher once in middle school ask "Does anyone know what language we speak?"

Nobody raised their hands and I figured it must be a trick question, so I did and I answered "American!"

She shook her head and said "No, Kazuma, we speak English."

Like no shit, why are you asking us such a dumb question?

KY really does have a law in which it is illegal to carry an ice cream cone in your pocket as it's considering concealment of a deadly weapon. KY is strange.

Technically, to the point only a linguist would give a fuck, you're both right. We speak American English, which is a separate dialect from the rest of the world's, because loan words.

FTFY. Also, I have a counter-example: an official link to the Kentucky statute identifying the official language of the state.

Supposedly people used to do that to steal horses.
