If I Had a Tail

Was really tough for me to choose this week because pretty much all of the songs were either "yeah this is fine" or unpleasant. Except for Bane's and Steiner's which I wanted to like but couldn't because of the vocals. =/

(1ST) Varien - Valkyrie III: Atonement (feat. Laura Brehm)
Initially sounds like it was made to be used in movie trailers. Vocals are nice. Pretty cool when the synth & drums come in at 1:50. That fill at 2:28 is dope, and the part right after where it opens up a bit reminds me of tAtU, with the way the vocals come through. It's good; goes a little long. I was hoping the synth would do some crazy solo-y stuff at the end, was totally an opportunity for it before the vocals come in for the last time at 5:23

(2nd) Bad Suns - Transpose
Definitely my kind of alt-rock, which Brohan clearly has down. I like that it's more upbeat than the last two submissions, but it's not quite as powerful or interesting. For sure something that'd be fun to drum along to.

(3rd) My Brightest Diamond - To Pluto's Moon (Son Lux Remix)
Unassuming to start, but goes through a nice subtle build & wash, and when the beat drops at 1:57 to join loop from 1:42, it's pretty dang dope. Those swells that start at 2:53, create a cool, anxious effect. Then there's some cool synth stuff going on in the background shortly after. The best submission through Wednesday.

Tupac - Keep Ya Head Up
Pac was a cool dude. It's nice to hear a rap song with kind lyrics that empower women, and which could inspire anyone really. The use of "Ooh Child" is icing on the cake - it's nice that they hold off on using it till the chorus instead of basing the whole song around it, unlike what a lot of hip-hop songs do with their samples. It was really a nice surprise.

Queens of the Stone Age - If I Had A Tail
Initially I was in agreement with others who felt this was a pretty average 'Queens' tune, and it kind of is, but it grew on me a bit. Definitely would be a good driving song, as the music video would imply. The one overhead shot reminded me of Spy Hunter, not sure if that was intentional. There have definitely been better songs like this, with a driving beat that's still in the pocket - a 'crusing' song - and it's not as good as something like 3's and 7's, but it's catchy and the chorus is memorable.

Freddie Gibbs and Madlib - Thuggin'
Nice, chill delivery and mood, despite the crass lyrics. Sampling is well-utilized. Not much else to say about it.

The Human Abstract - Crossing the Rubicon
I do not like metal. So, thank you Steiner for continuing to submit it every week. This song at least does some interesting stuff, though. That breakdown at 2:43 legit sounds like it's straight out of Double Dragon, which is cool. The 6/8 part that follows is reminiscent of Zelda.

Marmozets - Vibetech
I kinda like the crazy, chaotic instrumental, and when it goes into half-time at 2:03. I also like the intense, building vocals when they first come in. I do not like full-out screamo, which it unfortunately breaks into at 1:33, though it is interesting to hear a chick having a go at it. I like the comedic ending where they kept throwing in extra hits, as if they weren't sure when to stop, ha.

Whitesnake - Wine, Women, an' Song
Wow, alcohol, women, and music - what interesting material for song lyrics >_> when the song kicks into full gear at 0:41 it's alright, but the subject matter of the lyrics is completely pointless and uninteresting. I get a little irritated by songs that have nothing to say, unless they're insanely good instrumentally or have a great vocal melody.

Autechre - V-PROC
It was close between this and Mycro's for most droning and obnoxious. I do like that it starts with a march rhythm. At least it has a decent drumbeat drop in eventually. Still though, unnecessarily long without becoming any more interesting past the halfway mark.

bunbleman - Spider
Like almost every Mycro submission I'm kind of torn about it. It's chaotic, discordant, and annoying, yet there are certain aspects of it I like. The very beginning reminds me of Metal Crusher from Undertale - a plus. The melody slowly evolves into something somewhat interesting around the 2-minute mark or a little after. Honestly though by the 3-minute mark I'm pretty much just waiting for the song to end.

I'll put up the new topic I guess since I think I'm last

If I had a Tail

I dunno if it's on the top half of songs from Like Clockwork or if it's even in my top 20, but it's still a damn good song.

Pretty indifferent about this week.

Marmozets - Vibetech
It's like a thrashier but less acrobatic Fall of Troy. I can't say the time fuckery does it for me quite like it does for Mycro but it is nice to be thrown off the beaten path like a spent soda can on a hiking trail.

Whitesnake - Wine, Women, an' Song
Vagina Dentata - it means no worries! Seriously though why does that viper have a pussy mouth? And how is wine their drink of choice, aren't these guys supposed to be metal? I did not expect this bluesy anthem so the vibe was a nice surprise but I wish there were some more changes within that style to keep it fresh.

Bunbleman - Spider
This stumbles around with drunken confidence like a nerdy kid at a party until he falls in the pool and sees a mysterious light coming from the drain. I love the IDM type of percussion, it's abrasive yet squishy, active and unconventional. There's a jigsaw puzzle quality to the way the song reveals more and more familiar musical grammar throughout, starting with obscured outer edges and working its way to a central image. I'm into it.

Kero Kero Bonito - Build It Up
Aggressive, deranged bubble-gum pop. I'm bewildered, held at arms length from across the uncanny valley by a cutting edge Disney animatronic with a Casio keyboard. There are some exciting detours and developments but the singer seriously breaks the connection here.

My Brightest Diamond - To Pluto's Moon (Son Lux Remix)
Love the aesthetic right from the get-go, expansive and moody and heavy and mean. Never heard the original. Killer drum sound, that's a fuckin' foundation. I'm gonna have to put this Son Lux dude on a watchlist because the production here is on a tearing me apart lisa level. My favorite rec from any week thus far.

Freddie Gibbs and Madlib - Thuggin'
Pinata was one of my favorite releases of '14 but I flip-flop on this track. Madlib's sampling is mint and Gibbs brings the nastiness and contempt of a high ranking rap villain but this is one of the cases where I think the pairing feels awkwardly stitched together. Also, it might just be me but I think some of the other uploads of this track sound a bit more clear.

Queens of the Stone Age - If I Had a Tail
And ...Like Clockwork was a favorite release of '13. The guitars always have a lot of character with these guys, interesting fx and tones. If I Had a Tail aint' my favorite selection of riffs by them but their signature sound gets a lot of mileage with me and this has it in spades. It feels like an old standard already.

Varien - Valkyrie III: Atonement
Hypercinematic, trailer glue between the BWAAAHHHS in the imax theater of the mind. Somehow it manages to be epic and boring at the same time.

Tupac - Keep Your Head Up
If Gibbs is a rap villain then Tupac was the ultimate rap hero. I love his west coast production and maybe he isn't the fastest spitting or wordiest rapper ever but he always engages and comes across as baring his soul, this song being no exception. Lot of nostalgia value here although nowadays I can't help but think of Chris Pratt whenever that damn Ooh Child sample hits.

The Human Abstract - Crossing the Rubicon
Oh shit I saw these guys like 6 years ago, my old roommate used to love them. I guess it never rubbed off on me because I forgot the name until now. There's some very ornamental guitar work going on here but it doesn't grab me, the singer is a bit overblown and melodramatic, and the blastbeats or whatever they're called are just taxing to me. Maybe in 6 years I'll like it.

Bad Suns - Transpose
Not my kind of singer at all but I understand it's a very popular style. The oohs are nice. Kind of a slight tune, sounds fine but doesn't do a lot for me. The bass is probably my favorite part
