Board 8 > Anyone played the older Legend of Heroes games?

Ie. The ones before Trails in the Sky. Specifically the Gagharv games are the ones I'm interested in. I've come across somewhat varying thoughts online though, and I wanted to gather some opinions before getting them since doing so would be somewhat involved.

In general I play RPG's for the story. I don't typically care about gameplay much, though if the gameplay is particularly boring and takes too much time it can easily ruin a game for me (see Xenosaga for example).

Also I only speak English, so I'd have to get the localized versions which I've heard have quite bad translations. (Though I do have a somewhat higher tolerance for that than the LoH fanbase in general)

But like how bad does it suck? Are they still worth playing anyways given that I really really like the Trails games and would like anything similar?

I mean I am legit already debating doing this to play the Crossbell games, so...

I almost definitely won't because it's an absurd amount of work I feel like, but the fact I've even thought about it says something.

I think the translations patch for Zero is supposed to be better quality than the translation of the older games. Plus it's getting an improved version

They're bad localisations of a bad port, but the originals were great so even butchered they're still decent games.

The port stripped out the battle system (which, on PC, was the same as in the later Trails games, but on PSP was replaced with something much more generic), and the localisation switched around the order of the series, which screwed up the ongoing plot threads.

Yeah I knew about this and was planning on playing them in the original order if I ended up buying them.

I played the first PSP one. Its not great. Extremely bland, story and gameplay-wise.

the localization is bad yes and it's a bad port.

but tbh, I probably got more enjoyment out of them than the later games because they feel like they got more bloated up gameplaywise without actually being fun or interesting or deep just more busywork that kills the pacing and runs counter to even trying to make a story heavy game to begin with.

buuuuuuuuuuut I think the legend of heroes series isn't any good to begin with. >_>

I played The Moonlight Witch on PSP but the translation was abysmal and the battle system was super boring, so I didn't bother with the other gagharv games.
