Think logically about what being a politician means for the most part:

- significantly less pay compared to equally skilled private sector work
- public ridicule and little private life. Nothing is considered sacred or personal, not even your salary or tax claims or family life
- constant pressure to be working always. Take a break to play some golf? "That's our tax money at work"

So why would anyone be a politician under those circumstances unless they were either an egomaniac or a martyr?

Isn't that a famous quote by someone?

"The people who want power the most are the ones who should never be allowed to have it."

or something like:

"The people that are willing to do what it takes to get elected are the last people who should be allowed to rule".

Can't remember who wrote this.

EDIT: It's Douglas Adams from hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.

The major problemone of the major problems, for there are severalone of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.
To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.
To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.

It's a pretty common theme in a lot of literature through the ages. Even Dumbledore said it.

It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who, like you, have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise that they wear it well.

Another similar one: absolute power corrupts absolutely.

That quote predates superman by about 70 years and was made in regards to the Catholic Church by John Dalberg-Acton.

Are we putting "I want to do something good for my county/state/etc." under egomaniac?

eh I mean

why would you assume an egomaniac doesn't want to do something good for his country? equally, a martyr might not care about his country outside of a narrow ideological range of things. which one a politician is is really kinda irrelevant to the question of whether or not they want to do good stuff, you still need to have something wrong with you one way or another to put yourself through those paces and actually be successful

I don't know. As an extreme example, "I'm the only person who can fix healthcare" still makes you sort of an egomaniac, even if all of your intentions are good.

So teenagers and uneducated people stop settling for retail positions and go into politics instead? Great idea bro!
