S Pen is the only thing keeping me with Samsung (that and getting a Note 8 half off). You'd think Apple would make some kind of equivalent, or at least another Android manufacturer.

Because it's amazing for quick note taking and way more accurate for editing PDFs and cropping/editing photos. It's just useful as hell all around.

I can type notes faster than I can write them.

If I need to edit a PDF, I'll do it on a laptop or iPad.

The ability to just pull out the stylus and write on the screen without even turning the phone on is insanely useful for reminders.

Not even in the same ballpark of functionality.

It's just a capacitive stylus with a slot in the phone.

For reminders without turning my phone on, I generally use Siri and just speak it to her.
Siri, remind me tomorrow to put the garbage down by the street at 5 pm"

yea i do the same exact thing, siri is my go to for reminders & alarms

in general i hate typing and writing on phones with touch screen keyboards. i have never thought "man i wish i had a stylus so i could draw my notes onto this 6 inch screen"

Having a stylus for my phone has been very handy for me. As a network engineer, there are often situations where I'll need to draw out a network design to help explain a networking issue or concept to someone else who may or may not be network-savvy.

Instead of having to search for a notepad and pen or a whiteboard and markers and erasers, I can just draw it out right on my phone and even connect my phone to our presentation sharing devices in a conference room to draw it out as people look at the drawing on the TV in the conference room.

I went from a Note 5 to a Note 7, then had to downgrade to an S7 Edge. I was sorely missing the stylus functionality until I got the Note 8.

The stylus did indeed suck on those phones. It's much more fluid, responsive, and functional on the Note series, though.

Because Samsung is partnered with Wacom for their S-Pen, and Wacom has an unbreakable death grip on wireless battery-free stylus patents. You don't see competition because they literally can't compete with anything more complex than a piece of plastic that isn't pressure sensitive.

It's Wacom tech, not a capacitive pen. Has pressure sensitivity and well as a button that launches a shortcut menu. Complete 1:1 accuracy with less latency than capacitive. Can literally write on the screen while the screen is off and take notes without unlocking the phone.

The screen can detect the pen from an inch or so away.

Can hover the pen over words and auto-translate them. It's vastly easier to cut and paste text accurately. Can hover pen over objects you photograph and have it figured out what it is and where to buy it, even locally.

The pressure sensitivity is unreal. Something like 4000 degrees of pressure. It can even detect if you're using it sideways instead of straight on. The tip is thinner than a ballpoint pen tip so it feels extraordinarily precise.

I've always wanted an S pen for snapchat drawing. Using my finger is pretty frustrating for that. That's about it, though. Surprised that use case is never brought up.

Although it makes sense apple wouldn't do it. They're got a whole thing with their branding. You have to get an ipad for that stuff
