What are you talking about? He has fur, claws, whiskers, two arms, two legs, and a bright-red nose, just like all cats.

I think the nose is what throws me off the most. It looks more like a nose that would go on a cartoon dog than anything; cartoon cats' noses aren't typically emphasized like that.

I know who Sylvester and Tweety Bird are, but it didn't register to me when I was reading the topic title. I guess because Sylvester is so obviously and blatantly a cat, I didn't think he could have been the entity in question. I read the topic title and thought "Hmmm, I never heard of people thinking Sylvester Stallone looks like a cat, but maybe TC will provide me a picture that convinces me otherwise" so I clicked the topic, then the link, then I was like "Oooh."

I feel like most kids today would not recognize Tom and Jerry, so I definitely don't think they're Top 10. Daffy Duck deserves to be on there somewhere, though I'm not convinced he and Bugs even make the #2 spot (Looney Tunes have fallen off quite a bit in the last 10-15 years). Betty Boop might be there too. Maybe Cartman as well (and I say that as someone who hates South Park). Hell, I might even give Goku an outside shot.

Also, if you're including Pikachu despite the fact he premiered in non-animated form, you're also opening up the list to characters like Batman, Spiderman, Superman, the X-men, etc. (though I guess my Goku suggestion above would probably get tagged by that too).

I dunno, if I had to make a list of the 10 Most Famous, I'd say

1. Mickey Mouse
2. Donald Duck
3. Bugs Bunny
4. Spongebob Squarepants
5. Homer Simpson
6. Daffy Duck
7. Goku
8. Scooby Doo
9. Betty Boop
10. Cartman

Betty Boop wasn't even popular in the 80s/90s.

I'd say if it wasn't for her being a bit more than a cameo in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (and for the parody character in Drawn Together), she would be almost completely forgotten about.

I see her more these days than a lot of other "classic" cartoons that have faded from view. She enjoys this retro-cult status and has some historical notability for her presence as an early sex symbol.

It's subjective and certainly I could see her being left off the list, but she remains a pretty well-known character (particularly among adults).

Isn't Donald more popular than Mickey on a global scale? I know in most countries outside the US, he's the more favored Disney character, though the US does have one of the highest populations.

I think he's only more popular in like Italy. But more popular doesn't also mean more known.

Eh. I still think Betty Boop would be more well known, but that's just my gut hunch.

Somebody must have studied this at some point, but when I google it I just get a whole bunch of clickbait articles.

Well, for me, I tried to go with characters who are "primarily" (though not necessarily originally) known as cartoon characters. That's why I'm willing to count characters like Goku and Winnie the Pooh, but not characters like Superman or Pikachu.
