I'm replaying MGS2 for like the tenth time. I never got very far into 4. Is it capital-G Great like the first three Solid games? Should I play it?

As disappointing as FFXIII was when it first came out

it's a great game, IMO.

the cutscenes are really long, though, and some people feel like it plays out like fanfiction, with an overused plot device

but it's my favorite game where you play Solid.

I have a weird relationship with this game. I do think it's overrated, cringey and the story is kinda dumb but I've finished it 6 or 7 times and more times than any other MGS game. The first two Acts are flawless but the game goes downhill with 3. And there are also 45 minute long cutscenes lol.

It's not a bad game, but MGS fans have crazy standards for hideo kojima for some fucking reason so if they dont get what they expect, its considered a bad game.

critically it scored very high. 9's and 10's across the board when it first released.

the main critique is that the story is pretty fuckin whack, but its MGS, the story is already whack? Who gives a shit if it even gets more wild?

The gameplay however, is superb. Probably the best MGS gameplay behind MGSV. My real critique is that there's not a lot of it. And there's long cutscenes between each level segment. The cutscenes are fantastic though, especially the fight scenes. But when you are playing, it's great.

IMO its like a 8.5/10 game for me

Very good gameplay, excellent story.

I was not personally a fan of the mission style and pacing of MGS4. Very minor spoilers, but with MGS 1-3 the main parts of the games were a single mission you see through from start to end, the entire game is that one mission and the entire story revolves around it. In MGS4 the game is broken up into 5 chapters, which while technically are the "same mission", all have unique objectives and take place days/weeks apart from eachother.
You may not care but i wasnt a fan.

The story is still excellent though and the climax at the end of Chapter 5 remains one of the most memorable moments in gaming for me.

Who even skips cutscenes in a first playthrough? Especially in a story driven series?

MGS 4 was the first one I played after playing Peace Walker on PSP and enjoying the gameplay. I couldn't care less about the story and it had like 10 hours worth of cutscenes or some shit like that.

You are in the extreme minority. MGS is a series well renowned for its excellent storyline and most people play the games, in order, to experience it. It would be like starting to watch game of thrones at season 5, skipping the first 4 seasons, and only watching it becuse the characters die a lot

Its not as good as the first 3, but its still solid imo. I'd put it above PO, PW, and V for sure. There are a lot of cutscenes though, even for a Metal Gear game. Like there's parts of the game where its just an hour of uninterrupted cutscenes.

Oh I'm aware I wasn't playing it the way most would and that it's a franchise well known for its story and characters but it still would've been nice to make them skippable for people who have some reason to want to skip them.
For me all I wanted was a good stealth action game and I enjoyed it thoroughly without having any idea who anyone was or what was going on. And I've never had any interest in going back and playing like 20 years worth of games just to know what was going on.

You can skip all the major cutscenes except for certain minor 10 second cutscenes that happen mid-gameplay.

Like during the opening mission, when you first get control over Snake, there is a scene in which a tank arrives and a bunch of PMCs come out. You can't skip those type of cutscenes but you can skip every other cutscene.

Another thing to note, I think MGS4 was one of the first games to not have pre-rendered cutscenes. Even in The Last of Us, the cutscenes are pre-rendered and if you are wearing a different attire during gameplay then they will automatically switch back to the default attire in cutscenes. I found this quite annoying.

While, in MGS4 your attire stays the same and there are only some cutscenes in which Snake would change his Octocamo and you would be able to hear the sound effects that lets you know that Octocamo color has changed. All these things were very innovative for its time.

I really enjoyed it and played the hell out of it. The only thing that I didn't like about it was that the bosses weren't as fleshed out as the bosses in earlier games but the battles were fun.

MGS has always been a story and cutscene driven series so I didn't mind the long cutscenes, especially considering that MGS4 is a sendoff to the Solid Snake story, a beloved character.

It's way better than MGSV, which barely felt like an MGS game.

honestly the worst part of MGS4 is it ruins Raiden's story (and MGS2 as a whole somewhat) and part of MGS3 as well

Fantastic production. Gameplay is tight. Detail is excellent. The content is all there (except for Codec convos).

However, each act kinda forces you to play a certain way whether it's an objective or simply the enemy type. That's the worst part because you have all these options, but it feels like you can only go about it one way.
