Hmmmm

I mean there may have been better singular movies inside of a trilogy, but I can't think of an overall trilogy that's as perfect as LotR

I can't think of any other trilogy at the moment that consists of three masterpieces like LotR.
In other trilogies, there always seems to be at least one film that's not quite as good as the others.

My favorite trilogies are Back to the Future and Toy Story.

Original Star Wars for me, I guess, though it's close.

Too bad Terminator 3 wasn't up to the level of the first two.

One of the best, maybe, along with the original Star Wars trilogy (pre Special Edition) and "Back to the Future." I know Godfather and Dark Knight were strong contenders until their third entries happened. In a way, the Last Airbender trilogy was really good for not happening past the horrid first movie.

Oh, wait!

The Man With No Name trilogy. This one is also on par with being considered the best trilogy; it went from a Spaghetti Western retelling of an older tale, to a good follow-up sequel, to a spectacular finale.

Original Star Wars.

I suppose you could disqualify them by saying Star Wars isn't a trilogy anymore, but with the release of The Hobbit, neither is LotR, really...

No. Even if the Star Wars OT didn't exist, I still wouldn't rank LOTR that highly. I loved Fellowship, but the remaining two films dragged and the fight choreography was often outright stupid

Was going to say not really a trilogy, but then suspected you meant the Nolan ones instead the Burton series.

And, while I loved TDK, Begins and Rises kinda sucked for different reasons.

Star Wars as a whole isn't a trilogy, but I don't think anyone would disagree that it isn't made up of two (soon to be three) separate trilogies. And a buttload of other material outside of that, I guess but mostly the trilogies.

Still sad we're unlikely to ever get a filmed Thrawn trilogy, though.

Anyway for me it's a real toss-up between LotR and Star Wars OT. I lean towards the latter, but the former has some really strong aspects in its favor. In the end they're both great.

Begins I'll always hate for its nonsensical villain motivation -- albeit it ties into the comics to some extent -- but, more importantly, Batman's completely nonsensical bullshit justification near the end where he says "he doesn't have to save anybody" which, even if that was somehow true, overlooks that his fight directly caused the damage to the conveyance which would kill Ras. The villain's plot wasn't that bad, though. I just hated a lot of the nonsense between.

While Rises has a lot of silliness, I at least kinda liked Bane; and Cathaway (see what I did there?) was actually surprisingly decent.

As much as I love Batman, the third Dark Knight movie was an insult as a fan. Come on.

I do consider Star Wars a trilogy. But Return of the Jedi is super weak, it easily brings down the overall trilogy.

After reading the books, I'd honestly say the movies are way better than the books (I almost never say this). The movies cut out all the fat and random shit and it ends up being a perfect movie series.

Read the books if you really want, but don't let them push you away from the movies

A lot of RotJ doesn't have the punch of the first two films, but honestly the Battle of Endor is pure perfection. The three simultaneous battles (the space battle, the ground battle, and the lightsaber duel in the throne room) all featuring tense moments and concluding together. That is how you conclude a trilogy and do it right.

That's one of the things that really weighs on LotR on subsequent viewings is just how long the RotK ending drags on. I mean, I get that you're capping off a 12 hour epic, so it warrants a solid denouement, but man it feels like the movie is just never going to end.

Maybe it's because I loved the series so much, but I never felt like the Return of the King ending was that bad. It was emotionally satisfying for every character I've cared about for the past 12 hours.

In fact it's very similar to the start of the first film, which people don't seem to complain about

He had a huge goal, and almost succeeded...

Corrupting Harvey Dent, the only real hero Gotham had, and turning him into a criminal, and proving to the city that there is no saving themselves, and that there are no heroes.

Wayne and Gordon fabricated Dents story and turned him into a martyr to thwart Jokers plan
