Original 2DS:
+ absolute cheapest option by far due to clipping out some rarely used features
+ most likely to come with an older firmware to allow for certain "things" to be done to the system
- no folding design, screens get dirty a lot
- some people say it's too small for their hands

New 3DS XL:
+ most powerful of the options
+ more processing power allows play of "enhanced" 3DS games like Xenoblade and better performance in games like Monster Hunter and Smash Bros.
+ face-tracking 3D function for if you enjoy using the 3D feature a lot
+ SNES Virtual Console games exclusive to "New" 3DS family systems
- most expensive of the options
- some people say it's too big for their hands
- more likely to come on a more recent firmware that doesn't allow for the aforementioned "things" to be done

New 2DS XL:
+ balanced option with the enhanced power of a New 3DS XL but a cheaper price point and smaller size
+ can play every game the New 3DS XL can for cheaper, including SNES VC
- sill decently expensive at $150 new, unlikely to find used since they were recently released
- 100% guaranteed (I believe) to come on a recent firmware that doesn't allow for the aforementioned "things" to be done

Any other model of 3DS besides the ones listed above is pretty much obsolete compared to these. The only benefit to getting an original 3DS if you plan to do those "things" and can't find one of the above systems on a low enough firmware. Other people have the choices of games pretty much covered. Animal Crossing New Leaf and Mario Golf World Tour are the main ones that haven't been mentioned yet that I want to throw out there.

Game recs:

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games (Explorers of Sky (DS), Gates to Infinity (maybe; it's definitely skippable compared to its immediate predecessor and successor, but the story's serviceable enough, which is all I really play these games for), Super).
Zero Escape trilogy (Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors; Virtue's Last Reward; Zero Time Dilemma).
Shin Megami Tensei IV

Other mandatory DS games:

Ace Attorney series (original trilogy and Investigations at least, including the fan translation of Investigations 2).
The World Ends with You
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
Haven't played it myself yet, but I've heard good things about Radiant Historia.
Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem (fan translation; summarizes Shadow Dragon concisely enough that you never need to play Shadow Dragon in order to appreciate the sequel).
