so basically i used to be really into philosophy, and every once in a while i will try to read one of my books and maybe write something in response to it. but i never get very far.

as a job i work as a dishwasher. this is very depressing for me because i went to the top school in the country, did well and got a degree. i know in this decade a degree doesn't really mean anything at all, especially a humanities degree, but i feel like i am at least smart enough to be doing something commensurate to my level of intelligence. anyway for now i wash dishes and that's just what it is.

anyway the actual issue is that i'll be reading a book and be struck with the thought that "i am just a dishwasher. there is no point in reading these books" and then just stop reading. same thing happens when i watch online lectures.

idk

Why not try for a better job? Go to night school, learn some new skills

^ Hey now that's completely unfair.

the more you know the easier it will be for you to learn things in the future if you choose to pursue a more academically focused path

I got a Philosophy degree, too, and only worked in offices afterwards.

but I only pursued it because it was my quickest route to graduation.

well i am in school now, i'm working toward getting a masters of social work so i can become a social worker. i'm also volunteering in that area so i have experience and don't get screwed out of a job for lack of experience.

but that's a few years away and idk i just feel the way i do because i always have to be sad about something

Make sure you do plenty networking this time around with your masters. It's a boring old cliche, but it's just as much about who you know as what you know.

I done an internship at an accountancy firm while at college and was lucky enough to go straight in there after I graduated because I kept in touch with them and they made an opening for me.

your occupation does not define you. If you read the thoughts in philosophy books and become a more reflective, empathetic person because of it, your life is richer for it. If that isn't "enough" of a point for you, you might have been a little brainwashed by living in our anti-intellectual, capitalistic society.

It sounds like you should keep on trying to pursue some kind of career, because obviously you are not content with dishwashing, regardless of the social status or whatever of the job.
