I likely live somewhere rougher than you do I live in the suburbs of Chicago where parts of it the gun violence is through the roof, and haven't been shot at once in my life in 30 some odd years. My neighborhood is less than stellar as I got in plenty of fights as a kid, as people have been shot in it, including a few hours down someone was shot on the sidewalk probably like 10 years ago. I never walk around fearing for my life. I am aware of my surrounding, as my younger brother got jumped by two guys robbed once walking home from the bar so stuff happens, but it's not a constant.

The violence from chicago could spill over...sure. I drive through some less than great parts sometimes on the way home from work, but I don't stop there. I know where I belong and where I don't. I stay alive just fine that way. I drive a so so car so no one breaks into it as you never want anything too nice around here. I exist here till I get my next promotion then move the heck out of here and buy a house somewhere nicer.

While I've used firearms I don't personally own any guns but I don't feel like my life would somehow be that much safer if I had one or no one else did. I feel like anyone who feels they can't safely defend themselves with their fist should be able to use whatever they need to feel safe and use it responsibly. I am not a big guy at 5'4", but I can fend for myself well enough. I've gotten my asskicked before, and people have taken my stuff. I will survive, I will endure. I am not so afraid of death that I am afraid to live. You can die on your toilet, choke on a piece of food, get hit by a bus. What's the point in worrying about that?

I remember fighting a fire one time and thinking to myself, this tractor could explode in my face. I laughed to myself as I felt the heat from the flames. I thought naah, that's not going happen. I am not fun for the universe if I gimped. My journey is going be a very long and challenging one heh. I won't get off that easy.

Ultimately if someone really wants you dead, a gun just a form of convenience. If you think people can't kill you without a gun you lack imagination. You can make bombs and sharp objects out of all sorts of things. They will find another method and end you all the same if that's really their goal. Tons more of people die to cars, knives, baseball bats, fists and cheeseburgers(heart attacks) than guns. On the safe side don't needlessly tick people off, chances are much lower someone will be that motivated for to kill you.

Stuff like what happened in Vegas is thankfully rare at the end of the day. I know the media likes describe the USA as some sort of wild west will gun violence everywhere...but outside of some really lousy neighborhoods that is not the norm. Most people choose to not do that sort of thing. I take solace the majority choose to be lawful citizens and live constructive lives. I don't care sign over my rights to the government just so they can go thru everyone's houses and cease all firearms. Gun laws are not magical enchantments that stop bullets from hurting innocent people and only kill badguys. You can't outlaw death. (Though Emperor Pelagius Septim III tried.) I'm not suggesting that a better middle ground than where things currently are can't be found, but simply outlawing all firearms won't stop death.

Guns like other technology is just a tool. Every sword can be made into a plowshare or vice versa. People intentions are what make something good or bad not the tool.

I believe what he's trying to say is, guns aren't the problem. Criminals are the problem, and we need to cull them from the population. It's essentially a call to arms for warfare against the criminal class.

I disagree. I don't think shrugging and saying "well murder happens" is an appropriate response to these things. Crimes are often the result of motivation and opportunity; we should do what we can to address both. If limiting gun ownsership can decrease opportunity (and killing power) then why not?

Here's why a gun supporter would say we need them:
- hunting/sport
- recreational shooting
- protection
- overthrow government

Ok...

- fine, a simple rifle works
- also acceptable
- fine a handgun or shotgun
- haha

Besides "I like them or collect them" there's no reason to have the ability to buy and own more than a few guns, let alone 22+. Nor is there reason for there to own ones with the radical destructive power many have.

"But they'll get them illegally"? The more illegal something is the higher the chance that person will get caught before it happens. Taking away opportunity. If someone is reeeeally motivated then higher chance of being caught before they can do something.
