So I just finished Earthbound, and overall, I really loved it. I was expecting a pretty fun game, and it was even better than I'd have thought.

The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way were the mechanics behind the final fight with Giygas (I guess the invaded Onett and walk to Giygas had a bit too many enemies for my taste, but that's not a big deal). I went through the fight twice before I just looked up to see if there was some trick I was missing, and sure enough, you're supposed to use Paula to pray during the third stage.

Was there something I missed that was supposed to make me realize that's what to do? To my knowledge, that action had never been used anywhere else in the game, so I'd have never thought to use it here when every turn counts, at least not for a long time. That's always been a pet peeve of mine in games, and I'm just curious to know whether that's just how the game is or if I missed something.

Other than that, like I said, I really enjoyed the game, and I'm definitely going to play Mother 3 in the near future.

I don't think so? At least if there was I missed it.

While I would have preferred them just staying themselves (which wouldn't be too farfetched considering how much other crazy shit goes on), I guess I didn't have a problem with the robot bodies. Weird choice though, I agree.

their bodies had to manifest the robot bodies because of time travel and physics.

Out of difficulty or an emotional plot?

I definitely found more emotional resonance in EarthBound than I did with the original Mother, so if it's the latter I'm glad to hear in continues the upward trend.

I liked the robot bodies. It raised the stakes even more considering there was no certainty for whether or not they'd be able to go back into their real bodies. Not only that but it shows how selfless they were to stop Giygas even if it meant sacrificing their bodies and their lives as they knew it.

The plot. The storytelling is just so much better in Mother 3. Probably because of the GBA's capabilities over the SNES.

Back when the game was released it came with a guide/instruction book. Although the book didn't always given the answer to everything it gave the hints needed to solve things that otherwise would take a decent amount of guess work. The guide actually says you need to pray 9 times to gain the power to beat him.

I had a feeling this might have been the case. Nice to have it confirmed.

I bought the Wii U VC release and I remember hearing that there was a digital version of that guide that I was supposed to get, but I've never seen it so who knows?

Yeah, dialogue hinted at it.

(Pokey)
'Heh heh heh heh. You must really be at the end of your rope.
'In this bizarre dimension, you four are the only force fighting for justice...
'And here you stand,
'waiting to be burned up with all the rest of the garbage of this universe...
'Haaaaah! That's so sad. I can't help but shed a tear.
'You know, my heart is beating incredibly fast,
'...I must be experiencing absolute terror!
'Do you want to scream for help here in the dark?!
'Ha ha ha ha ha!
'Why not call your mommy, Ness!
'Say, "Mommy! Daddy! I'm so frightened! I think I'm gonna wet my pants!"
'I know you have telepathy, or something, so just try and call for help,
'you pathetically weak heroes of so-called justice!

'No one will help you now!
'Ha ha ha haah...
'Don't worry, your pitiful suffering with be over soon.

~

And, yeah, when I bought the game (for like... $10, lmao) it came with its own strategy guide, complete with scratch and sniff stickers.

Well shit. I thought that was just Porky being antagonistic.

I'm mad at myself considering one of the things I liked about the game overall was that the game gives a lot of hints if you pay attention to the dialogue.

I know why they had to get the robot bodies
I just don't like them
I would of found it funny if the robot bodies looked just like them

they looked like them, ness had his hat, paula had her boy, poo didn't have any defining feature, Jeff had his glasses.
