Technology. Highly advanced police forces with drones monitoring large crowd events. Smart guns that can only be used by the correct ID signatures. make traditional guns obsolete and illegal force people to buy smart guns.

Dang I like this idea. You could have smart guns that simply won't fire in certain areas. So like a concert or event you could send out a signal that would block all guns within a 5 mile radius.

but how will we protect ourselves from the "tyrannical government"? after all, that's what the debate comes down to when it's not about protecting yourself from criminals

Yes I see your point. It could be completely abused by oppressive governments.

To start, education. Mental health and firearms as separate subjects.

Next, something the NRA opposes, gun registration. All firearms should be registered to their owners. Registration may put me on the grid, as it were, but it allows two benefits that aren't talked about near as much.

1) My Sig P320 and my AR-15, since they are registered to me, can be insured in the event of a loss.
2) If either of those are stolen, I can call the local police or sherrif's department and report them as stolen, with serial numbers to identify. Should a crime be committed with them, that puts me much, much less on the hook for the crime, and allows the police to check the numbers when they find them to verify that they are, in fact, stolen.

Opponents of registration in the past have used the "it takes a week or longer" phrase to oppose it. However, that is no longer the case. Registration is done at the time of purchase, and takes ten minutes or less.

There is no problem that can't be solved by applying more yuri to it.
