I disagree, start with morrowind.
Morrowind's combat system has not aged terribly well, but the rest of the game makes up for it IMO.

Oblivion is crap with it's level scaling. It's easier to beat that game at level 1 then level 30.
Don't get me started on the common bandits running around with daedric enchanted armor.

Daggerfall and Arena are horribly antiquated and don't really represent the series from Morrowind onward.

Morrowind can be a little harder to get into since it's very oldschool in some ways.

Oblivion is playable vanilla but the leveling system WILL fuck you over if you play long enough, I'd suggest installing a mod (I like OblivionXP personally) to fix that particular problem.

Skyrim is playable right off the bat but it's the worst of the 3 IMO.

Geez. I forgot about that. It's been years since I've played Oblivion.

Yeah if you mod the hell out of oblivion and get rid of the level scaling it isn't so bad. But Vanilla oblivion is just terrible. I think the mod you would want is Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul if my memory serves me right...

I'll have to disagree partially with Ash. I think a large part of Morrowind's appeal stems from nostalgia, that's true. However, I think when compared with newer entries in the series (Oblivion, Skyrim, Online) there's a lot of areas of writing/design where it outperforms them.

That said, a lot of things in the engine are very outdated (a few things like the combat system can't really be fixed by mods either) and don't hold up very well.

I'd say TC should try it with an open mind though.

If I were to rank them it would be Morrowind > Skyrim > Oblivion > Daggerfall > Arena

Daggerfall and Arena are just too old these days...

id still say morrowind is the best of all the elder scrolls games, but someone nowadays going back to it its hard to know if youll like it. it doesnt have a lot of the conveniences that the modern ES games have and can be extremely unforgiving.

I mean...I feel like you're gonna have a bad time because it's not nearly as streamlined as Skyrim, or even Oblivion is. I dunno, it's up to you.

Here's a tip if you do play Morrowind first, however. Pick a weapon stat and pump upwards of like 70 points into it before starting. Pick just ONE WEAPON STAT (to start, you can definitely build more later), and stick with it as that is what is going to get you through the game. Also, keep an eye on your stamina at all times. The lower your stamina, the less damage you inflict, the more times you miss when attacking, and the easier it is for you to be knocked down. Keep an eye on your stamina.

Other than that, man, just have fun. Morrowind is all about learning as you go. Pick a direction once the game starts, and just follow it.

Tbh I never even include Daggerfall or Arena when I rank the series.

They're just way too different from the other entries it may as well be a different series.

I've played some pretty tedious games. :v I'll be okay I think. Thank you for the advice though! I'll pick one weapon and focus on that.

yeah it's pretty divisive

People usually like the elder scrolls game they played first the best because it was their introduction to the series.

I can only say oblivion is a good game if the level scaling is completely overhauled through Obscuro's (https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/46199/?). Otherwise it's trash tier IMO
Morrowind is my favorite though and Skyrim was close

Oblivion XP:

or

Realistic Leveling:

whichever you prefer

I still believe oblivion is the worst of the three even with these overhauls though.

no, no that sucked!!

It should NOT be EASIER to beat the game at level 1 then it is at level 30...

...so you want reverse difficulty?

IMO leveling should be a way for the player to keep up with the world that levels up independent from them as they progress through the story and/or exploration. It should still get harder, but that should be because the player is taking on tougher challenges, and leveling is a way to play those challenges at the intended difficulty (hard) as opposed to overbearingly hard or impossible.

FCOM pretty much fixes everything with the game, but it's a huge pain in the dick to get working correctly. Here's a link to a FCOM Superpack installer that gets you FCOM, plus like a hundred other mods. Makes it very easy to install.

It sounds like we are on the same page here. Oblivion was trash because EVERYTHING leveled as you leveled, the oblivion world literally leveled up SPECIFICALLY depending on your character level.

It is also MORE difficult to beat the game at level 30 then it was at 1.

There is absolutely NO CIRCUMSTANCES where common bandits should be wearing fully enchanted daedric gear.

That is why I so strongly recommend OOO or apparently FCOM as stated above.

Aside from the level scaling, the actual leveling system was awful as well in vanilla oblivion...

YES! (To TC)

IMO, Morrowind and Skyrim are the best Elder Scrolls games.

Oblivion isn't bad, but to me, it's not RPG-enough to be Morrowind, and fails at being more action oriented to be Skyrim. It's kind of just stuck in the middle without being good at anything. Still worth it if you can get it for cheap (which shouldn't be hard).
