Phone shopping against my will-- my $60 phone has been dying for some time.

Been a while since I've bought an Android, and every time I think it'll be easier since hardware's improved, I find myself nitpicking.

Personal experiences? I know I said "budget phone" but I am willing to spend up to $400-500 if I think it'll last me a few years.

Currently contemplating a Nexus 6 despite the age* because if I made my current phone last years, I can definitely make that beautiful fatty last. Super easy to flash, too.

EDIT: Although it is only officially supported up to 7.0, after they retracted 7.1.1 or whatever. Probably Pixel related, or hardware/marketing reasons; can still flash that, too, but I'd almost rather not experiment with unpredictable/unseen consequences

avoid android system updates if you can. they're designed to slow down older phones so you have to buy a newer, faster one.

which is weird since 4 and 5 were designed to be able to run fast as shit on subpar hardware

Android 8 slowed my 6P down something fierce. 7/8 have been updates that bog things down.

Maybe consider a second hand OnePlus 2/3/3T?

I think they'll improve over time. I think the main problem is that they have all of these development teams sitting around, and they invent all of these practically useless features that eat up resources more and more, but once hardware improves it will be hardly noticeable. Might be a few years until that happens, but I definitely agree with your assessment.

Personally prefer barebones OSes; Lollipop and Marshmallow are overall pretty great.

Yeah... looking into those off and on. I've read mixed reviews on OnePlus although to me they seem like contenders for my budget. Haven't ruled them out yet.

it turned my camera's video recording to a stuttered framerate. Kind of annoying. I can no longer make videos on my phone for work with that shitty framerate. :S

Have you considered flashing your phone to a previous update?
