I'd prefer a stick so I can at least extract some enjoyment out of driving, but pickings are slim. At this price point I'm looking at beat up Civics, which aren't a bad choice if I can find one that isn't riced or falling apart. There's also a lot of Volkswagens, which I'm skeptical of.

I almost picked up a 2004 Chevy Silverado on the cheap at an auction - I was the sole bidder at $1.5k, but the seller's reserve wasn't met. Guy wanted $3500 for a V6 with a shortbed, rusty fenders and a nonfunctional dash. Couldn't even read the mileage for titling purposes. Get the fuck outta here lol

Miata

I actually have a Miata now, a '91 with the 1.6. It needs quite a bit of work - the front struts are shot, the clutch is starting to slip, the top needs to be replaced, there's body rust, plus a while bunch of other stuff. I'm not sure if I just want to sell it or try and fix it up, but either way I need a better daily driver before Winter hits.

Impreza or Legacy/Outback then. $3k probably won't get you much, but $2k got me an Outback Wagon in good shape that's still running like a top today (sold to a family member). For an all-rounder, you can't go wrong with either of those in wagon form.
