I like how they simulated the feeling of being alone and in a claustrophobic area by having the camera in really close on Samus, while giving her ridiculously large pixel counts for the time. This was using imagination to deal with limitations in architecture.

I still recommend playing it. Even though the remakes are both better games mechanically, I did notice a different feel to the original, even before I watched this video. I just couldn't pinpoint why it felt so different.

That video does a good job of articulating why Metroid 2 is a uniquely different game. It isn't a celebration of Samus Aran, the bounty hunter; it's a documentation of the mission she was ordered on and the way she essentially wiped out all of the metroids.

When I was in middle school a kid let me play his Metroid 2 during the ride and he was at the very end and I accidentally deleted the file. I still remember him shouting in fury as I got off at my stop.
