It's mostly gay people who use gay "slurs" to refer to themselves and other gay people.

Really?

It's a bit like the way black people sometimes use the n word to each other but if you did it it would be wrong unless you were really really tight with them, and sometimes not even then.

Are they using the slurs specifically as insults? Or are they just calling another gay guy a *** casually?

Because I've heard it used both ways by gay people.

I was riding in a moving truck with my boss to drop of some tables downtown, we get to the Quarter and there's a group of gay dudes who are drunk in the middle of the street, my boss without missing a beat sticks his head out the window and yells "Move it you fucking f*****s!!!"

A few in my various gay friend circles will occasionally use some female pronouns (she, queen, bitch, honey, etc) on each other as banter, but "f**" is never used and "f*****" (hard T at the end!) is used rarely and with full, hateful intent -- as slurs should be.

That's about as close to correct use as possible. If they were being drunk and carrying on the sidewalk they wouldn't have been f*****s. As for if it's appropriate use.... eh.

Never heard of it before, but then again I'm about two degrees of friends away from the culture that's balls deep in RPDR and has/had an unhealthy fascination with "yaaaaaaas".

I'm guessing they smushed "honey" and "c***" together? Seems apt enough with one part insult and one part condescension. I wouldn't call it either homophobic or a slur, by doing some casual glances on its use.

Depends on the gays in question. I find being referred to as a female annoying most of the time. Referred to as a slur is fine.

I think that gives slurs more power if they are inhibited like that.

I was mocking the N-word privilege posts we see on CE every five seconds.

When I'm hanging out with other gay people, we often use slurs for gay people when talking to each other.

YES! I often feel like I'm not a part of the gay community because I'm not loud and proud or I don't get fiercely angry about something trivial.

That's fine if gayness is a large part of someone's identity, but it isn't mine.

I know more about gay men than gay women, although I assume the pressure to be fierce and sassy and butch is pretty much the same as the pressure to be a kink queen.

lmao! That was great. I love it.

But yes, it's similar with gay women. There a significant amount of man-hating that's required. I never understood it. I've seen some lesbians go insane in a bar because some guy tried to buy someone's girlfriend a drink.

You know what happens when someone does that to me or my wife? We let them buy it and have a nice conversation and sometimes gain a new friend.

I think this is in essence the spirit behind what's fracturing 3rd wave feminism. I think there's a silent majority here that just wants to have a pleasant conversation and not give a guy a hard time for trying. Maybe they don't appreciate how much pressure is on men to feel like they need to initiate these things all the time.

Anyway, that's my take.

I know a couple of gay guys who use the f***** insult to refer to other gays who act in an effeminate or flamboyant manner, though people actually referring to themselves to that would be a new concept to me. I've seen it used in a manner not intended to degrade or insult someone, though I have Seb more causal use of the n-word or c-word.
