Balm has more benefits for shaping and styling, kinda like a mustache wax for beards featuring conditioner elements.
Beard oil is more a quick moisturizer that doesn't shape a beard and often are scented, like a face cologne. Yup, oil is all I use myself at home. I find it works well enough for my needs.
