Hm, might give MGSV another shot at some point I guess. Maybe having slightly better graphics will be what puts it over for me.

Oh that's actually pretty sweet, I don't have either of those

I really want to play MGSV but when I brought it up here before everyone said you absolutely cannot play it without already having played literally every game in the series. Is that really the case?

it's not true in the slightest?

MGSV's plot is stupid and pointless and probably has less to do with the entire series than anything else. The reason you play mgsv is so you can put a chicken on your head and run past a bunch of guards who are distracted with balloon versions of yourself to rescue a dude through a wormhole.

Yeah literally the entire reason I didn't buy the game was because I made a topic about it here and pretty much everyone said you can't enjoy it without playing 1-4 first

It's not really recommended to play MGSV first because what little story there is probably won't make any sense or be impactful in any way, but if you don't care about that, go for it.

MGS V is a weird one. It ostensibly exists as a bridge between the MGS games set in the past and the MGS games set in the present, attempting to tie up loose ends between those two eras. It's also the last MGS game, a franchise built on existing knowledge of strange tangents. You would expect it to have a high barrier to entry. In actuality, it's more of a direct sequel to a PSP game and a 45 minute prologue than anything else, and those ties require little more than a summary to get you up to speed. For an MGS game, it's pretty straight forward. This isn't a game you need to study for.

It's worth playing because it's mechanically very satisfying and has brief, but interesting, set-pieces. If you have Ground Zeroes, which was also given out on PS+, try that to get an idea of the stealth gameplay and base-infiltrating loop. It's the bulk of what you'll be doing in MGS5. If you like it, jump into Phantom Pain.

I think the idea that playing the MGS games will help you understand ANY of the story is laughable. You'd have an easier time comprehending a Japanese phone directory.

I don't think the general flow of MGS's story is that hard to follow. Not to say that the story isn't a hot mess at times, but it's not usually as a result of being utterly incomprehensible.

I think what appeals to people about the meta-narrative in MGS is less the overall plot and more about character arcs and motivation. Experiencing that first hand helps ground you in the next game.

Which is also why it's okay to start with Phantom Pain. Most of the important characters were introduced after MGS4.

I'd say the biggest argument for not playing MGSV before other MGS games is for spoiling certain plot points if/when you do ever play those other MGS games, rather than ruining your experience of MGSV itself.

If you made that topic before or right when it came out, we were probably making some assumptions based on the rest of the series.
