Aside from the fact that Puerto Rico voted heavily in favor of Hillary Clinton, there's also the Jones act, an artifact of Wilson era colonialism which prevents Puerto Rico from trading with countries that aren't the US. A reasonable president would try to issue an executive order to suspend it so an island full of American citizens could have its suffering relieved, but I genuinely don't believe Trump is above punishing those who voted against him.

on my way home from work I listen to NPR, and they brought up the Jones Act and were basically playing Devil's Advocate that with the amount of ports the country has, it's not really like foreign ships will help that much
of course they were on the side of suspending it, but still

So what if Puerto Rico is an island? It's pretty damn close to the continental US and we have plenty of boats. Such a bullshit excuse

All the airfields and ports got screwed over hard by two hurricanes.
Where are boats going to dock? Where are the planes going to land?

Maybe if the liberals all change their profile pictures on Facebook they will fix all of that so help can arrive.

A leader who can create and suspend laws at will is a dictator.
Most people don't realize this. The scary bit is that some people do, but want it anyway.

The insane part is people who hate trump seem to want to give him this power. It's laughable.

Actually addressing the topic, unlike 90% of the people here, part of it is because its an island and more isolated than other parts of the country, but also it's because it was hit much harder than either texas or florida. There is major infrastructure damage, cell coverage is out, power is out, so coordinating relief efforts is extremely difficult.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/27/us/puerto-rico-aid-problem/index.html

There are tons of supplies in port, but the problem is they can't distribute them as they can't contact truck drivers and when they can, its hard to navigate the damaged roads.

I feel so bad for them. I wonder if they will ever recover.

Oh, and today I heard that the distance from Puerto Rico to the mainland is about 1200 miles (I think).

Eventually, sure, but I don't think that will happen for years. The electrical grid was already on the verge of breaking down, and now it's just absolutely demolished.

The news doesn't do enough to get this fact across. I have family in PR and stay there regularly. Power goes out almost weekly, and while this is usually only for a few hours, sometimes it lasts for days. There's no redundancy in the system, and government corruption had ensured that improvements and alternative power sources were eternally delayed.

What I'd bet my money on is exodus.

Watch him on epic rap battles of history...

"The whole system is rigged, and we all know the riggers. For the past 8 years, this country's been run by-"

Thankfully he is interrupted before he can finish the line. It's clear what he was going to say.

Good. I am happy to be proven wrong if it means less people suffer.
