Just started chapter 3.

I have Agate with me.
I also like Olivier in combat, so my choices are Kloe, Zin or Tita. Tita was pretty meh, my Khloe is a great healer, but not the best AoE atm...Zin I have no idea about just got him.

I did beat the final boss in the first game with Olivier and Zin along with Joshua and Estelle.

Agate/Olivier/Kloe

If Joshua is available he trumps everyone all the time.
Agate is a top tier character for physical damage
Olivier is one of the best spell casters

Kloe (healer/caster) or Estelle (physical OR healer/caster, whichever you need more) are next best option imo.

Personally, I used Agate, but I would go for Zin because he can increase his attack power by a lot in battle.

Use that move and then wait for a critical attack, the use his S Break for massive damage. I would use Zin and Kloe. Agate is awesome for farming shining poms, though.

My end party is estelle josh olivier and agate

Estelle support and attack, but mostly attack
Josh is healing and support sikce he is jist god damn fast
Olivier is nuclear bomb
Agate is the wrecking ball.

Anyway, it is fine imo in this series to switch and experiment. Since it is prettt easy levelling up left behind characters. The hassle is switching equipment and quartz

I found every combination of character have their own viable combination. 3 is even better at that since the roster is HUGE.

Only problem with 3 is two character in particular (Joshua+"New Joshua") are far and above everyone else.

However that does leave 2 slots for whatever you prefer.
