He turned down the role because he didn't "understand the story", I think the tale goes.

Which in turn when he saw the finished product made him decide to take part in movies he didn't understand, and thus League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was born. And then he saw the end product of that and swiftly retired from acting.

I mean... Denethor is like the worst character in the movie. So horribly written. It would have been even more of a joke if Sean Connery had buffooned his way through the dialogue.

Too bad they didn't follow the original League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. He would've gotten some pussy

IIRC he basically said he realized he didn't understand movies anymore after the whole fiasco with LotR and LoEG and that was why he retired.

Only cause Jackson and Co. don't know what subtlety is. He's better in the books. They make him out as just an asshole who almost seems evil instead of a man who goes mad due to immense grief, hopelessness, and Sauron's trickery. They did the same to Boromir and Faramir to a much lesser extent. Connery probably couldn't do that Denethor right now that I think about it.

Honestly, Faramir hardly got written period in the movies. He's just kind of Boromir's brother that has a similar (though much more lowkey) bout of temptation from the ring.

Oh, and then he and Eowyn boned because third-string ranger is better than no ranger. >______>

Pretty much. The whole (spoilers just in case) taking Frodo and Sam to Osgiliath was not only wrong, but was just a waste of time in an already long movie.
