It's not like we can't do both at the same time. There's freaking precious metals to be mined from asteroids, dammit.

Because some people have this absurd idea that either:

A. Earth doesn't have sufficient resources to sustain life so we need to find another planet to ecologically rape

B. We need to make contact with extraterrestrial intellegent life that we have no proof exists

We should defund NASA and only give them enough to alert us to immediate threats such as asteroids or solar flares.

minerals in asteroids

entire planets that are just like Earth, that have plants and animals and tons of living space. yes we haven't proven that that exists. but we know there is like a 95% chance it does. we keep finding earth sized planets. and some of those I am sure have earth like atmospheres. based on the sheer size of the universe and the law of averages, I believe that these planets exist.

It doesn't in the long term.

This isn't why NASA exists, but nonetheless, the scale of the universe pretty much precludes some others societies out there from not existing. It's just a statistical improbability when we've already found planets (with overall extremely limited technology on a universal scale) that come somewhat close to matching our conditions. That's in one limited area of one galaxy among multiple trillion, with liquid water occurring on at least two planets within our own solar system.

We should defund NASA and only give them enough to alert us to immediate threats such as asteroids or solar flares.

It would if we redirected NASA's funds to sustainable farming.

So you're willing to waste trillions in funds and resources because we might find something, meanwhile people are starving here?

What? Farming is not the issue with resources. A lack of food is an issue in developing or third-world nations due to poor farming conditions. In general, developed nations like ours do not suffer from food shortages on a seasonal basis. We do not have famines. The cause of potential lack of food in the U.S. is due to a lack of a person/family's economic resources, not the actual availability of food.

I'm talking about resources that are not easily renewed and are limited and could buckle under a growing population or cause huge price hikes. This isn't necessarily a concern within the next 50-100 yeas, but 1000-2000+? Absolutely, and that's when space travel to take resources from other celestial bodies would be useful to have. Even more responsibly, we could do that before it becomes an issue so no shortages occur to begin with.

So you're willing to waste trillions in funds and resources because we might find something, meanwhile people are starving here?

We don't waste trillions on NASA. We put in less than 20 billion per year and have even less consequential things we spend significantly more on.

So, sure, with the note that those 20 billion dollars are not the thing preventing people from starving. You're being disingenuous.
