I moved to Massachusetts and was still covered by my parents insurance a few states away. At least I think I was, I never used it.

Idk. Does Cobra still exist? I was living in GA under Mom's insurance in NY. Everything was covered.

Huh? I moved two years ago and still use my parents' insurance. Where you live shouldn't matter.

It matters because an out of state insurance plan likely does not have any in-network providers in a different state

It means you'll need to pay more to actually utilize your coverage.

edit -- I suppose some plans won't cover providers that are out of their network at all, but I don't know how prevalent that is

If you have blue cross blue shield, on your insurance card in the bottom right corner is there a little briefcase symbol that says PPO?

Worked in insurance for 5 years-

It does matter sometimes. Blue Cross / Blue Shield shares a PPO network. So if you live in PA and drive to Oregon, for example, you can use their PPO network there as in network.

If it's an HMO or other types it will be out of network. If it's an emergency and you have an HMO there are exceptions to going to out of state doctors but check with your insurance plan.

I dunno, I mean my dad gets his plan through Microsoft, and he was like "it's a difference of like a single-digit number of dollars to keep you on our plan until you turn 26"

It's possible that my options are limited, but my neurologist just gave me an EEG and medication refills for no cost (I mean barring the CVS cost of like $10 for the pills), but my dental was covered and everything I've had to do since I moved has been covered.

Ah that's probably why then. I have BCBS through my parents.

We have an HMO. What would I have to do, just look up doctors in our new area that can be under the hmo?
