Idk about you guys, but the twin towers were UGLY and devoid of any design. Just two tall grey rectangles. Imagine the twin towers around now, in 2017. Would the city want to tear it down? 2017 is very different from 1970s design.

They would never have taken them down due to aesthetics. Though some might suggest that the aesthetics that they symbolized did make them a target.

Having said that, I do agree they were horrible looking building. Arrogant, bland, heartless, redundant.

Though there is a lot of today's skyscrapers that are total stunts and look horrible and unprofessional, and more an expression of some architects ego, then and understanding of the public space they occupy.

Though I will say, I do think they, relievingly, did a good job of 1 World Trade Center.
I really like its faceted design, and I don't mind the glass. ((Still haven't seen it in person, yet))
I also am glad that they did not call it The Freedom Tower.
~Not so sure about the rest of the project. But One WTC looks good.

The Empire State Building is still my favorite.

On the one hand they were losing money but on the other they were so full of asbestos the cost to demo them would have been astronomical. That is very valuable real estate they sat upon but legitimate demo would have been very expensive.

If it hadn't been for all the magic and miracles that happened that day 16 years ago they would still be there at 40% capacity or less since the port authority does not have the money to demo them.

I don't think it's appropriate to call that day with "magic and miracles"
