It is crazy because at first it seemed like mild curiosity, but once one person stepped in to say hi, everyone just rushed their asses at once.

Japan is one of the least racist Asian countries and one of the lesser racist countries in general. Stop taking the ignorant memes of the internet at face value.

Big cities like Tokyo are not racist. Rural Japan is still fairly racist.

More so their depictions of black people in media than their actual feelings/attitudes towards them.

As far as the topic goes, sure I bet it's super awkward to deal with that shit, but damn sure beats the alternative imo

most of their depictions of Black people are directly influenced by America's depiction of Black people, and we all know who controls that, so yeah...

but other than that, I rarely hear of bad experiences in Japan from Black people who have visited.

When my wife went to China a similar thing happened thanks to her blonde hair. People were fascinated by her blonde hair. When she was clothes shopping teen girls would follow her to see what she was interested in. Business men wanted to take photos with her.

Japan isn't racist, they're just mostly ignorant because they're a rather homogeneous country that is close to 99% japanese, and 1% everything else.

The big tourist places in China are always like that for foreigners. I went to the same exact spot with some friends, and we had groups of Chinese people want to take pictures with us. I'm a white guy and one of my friends there was black, but even when I didn't have him with me they still wanted a picture with me. I remember when this woman made me pose with her 4-year-old kid for a picture. Outside of Tiananmen square or other major tourist spots, it doesn't happen much, though I guess it still happens if you look really unique or weird.

But at the tourist spots, you get visitors from rural parts of China and Asia who haven't seen white or black people much in their lives before. And after one family of Chinese people starts taking pictures with a white or black person, the others who see it start to feel emboldened enough to join in.
