I went to the same exact spot with some friends, and we had groups of Chinese people want to take pictures with us. I'm a white guy and one of my friends there was black, but even when I didn't have him with me they still wanted a picture with me. I remember when this woman made me pose with her 4-year-old kid for a picture. Outside of Tiananmen square or other major tourist spots, it doesn't happen much, though I guess it still happens if you look really unique or weird. But at the tourist spots, you get visitors from rural parts of China and Asia who haven't seen white or black people much in their lives before.
