because you're running away from the government, rebels, etc., not the culture.

There is good and bad in your original country. You move out, escaping the bad parts. Then you try to change your new home to the good parts you remember from your old home.

They aren't trying to change it to bad. They're trying to change it to familiar.

Understand that even if they flee a country because of things they feel are seriously bad, that doesn't mean they think everything about their country and/or culture is bad. And again, it's easier to do what's familiar than it is to adopt an entirely new culture. It's a very easy rut to naturally fall into.

One thing about Westerners will never understand is pride in their ethnic and culture. A sense of individualism that makes you special is something you guys can't comprehend which is why you can't understand why people who comes and lives in America still celebrate who they are. Sometimes being American also means being closed minded which is sad. Thankfully I'm one over the very few enlighten Americans who understands this.

Silly things like that aside, I agree with the first response about people just wanting something familiar to them. You might not like the economic state of your home country, or maybe the government is oppressive, but you probably still like the culture, the people, the food.

Because its the people in control you are escaping. Plus they mainly are trying to recreate the parts of that culture they likes and not the parts they didn't like.

Immigrants always brought their culture with them. America's culture is a mishmash of the cultures of earlier immigrants who came to the new world with their old traditions. Many of our traditions are based on those of other lands.

You are asking modern immigrants to do something the older generations didn't have to do? Does that seem fair? They are forced out of their homes but why can't they keep some part of it?

They don't realize this happened though. Every generation has tons of stupid people which leads to this dumb groundhog day scenario regarding immigration.

Why do conservatives expect immigrants to completely abandon their culture and instantly learn a new language when they immigrate? I took two semesters of French in college and I still can barely speak a word of it. Learning a new language is hard, and takes time.
